2 Connect the rear surround speakers. Connect the speaker cords from the rear surround speakers to the appropriate REAR SPEAKER jacks. Connect the solid cords to the red jacks and connect the striped cords to the black jacks. Keep the speaker cords away from the antennas to prevent noise. 4 Connect the FM/AM antennas. For MHC-F250AV Connecting the supplied rear and center surround speakers enables you to fully enjoy Dolby Pro Logic Surround sound.
Step 2: Setting up the surround speakers (continued) Adjusting the speaker volume 2 (For MHC-F250AV only) (For MHC-F250AV only) Place the center surround speaker so it is placed about the same height as the front speakers (A). Align the center surround speaker with the front speakers or place it slightly back from the position of the front speakers (B).

3 Inserting CDs Open the front cover by pushing the right edge of the cover. You can insert up to 51 discs into this player. We recommend you use the PLUS ONE slot for CDs you will be inserting and removing frequently (see page 29). 1 4 3,7 2 Front cover 4 Turn the jog dial until you find the disc slot where you want to insert a disc, while checking the disc number (written beside every slot and also indicated in the display).
5 Insert a disc with the label side facing right. Notes • Make sure you have inserted the disc into each slot at a right angle to the rotary table. If the disc is not put in straight, it may damage the player or the disc. • Make sure the rotary table comes to a complete stop before inserting or removing discs. Connecting optional AV components To enhance your system, you can connect optional components. Refer to the instructions of each component. Connecting an MD deck for analog recording Make sure to match the color of the plugs and the connectors. To listen to the sound of the connected MD deck, press FUNCTION repeatedly until “MD” appears.
Connecting a super woofer speaker You can connect an optional super woofer speaker. To super woofer Connecting a VCR Make sure to match the color of the plugs and the connectors. To listen to the sound of the connected VCR, press while holding down FUNCTION when the power is turned off. This switches the “MD” function to “VIDEO”. Once you enable the “VIDEO” function, just press FUNCTION repeatedly until “VIDEO” appears.
Connecting outdoor antennas AM antenna Connect the outdoor antenna to improve the reception. Connect a 6- to 15- meter (20- to 50- feet) insulated wire to the AM antenna terminal. Leave the supplied AM loop antenna connected. Jack type A FM antenna Connect the optional FM outdoor antenna. You can also use the TV antenna instead.

Playing the CD tracks repeatedly –– Repeat Play This function lets you repeat a single CD or all CDs in normal play, Shuffle Play and Program Play. CONTINUE REPEAT (Power) / Press REPEAT during playback until “REPEAT” appears in the display. Repeat Play starts. Playing the CD tracks in random order 4 Press ENTER or CD (P. “J” appears and then all the tracks play in random order. –– Shuffle Play To cancel Shuffle Play You can play all the tracks on one CD or all CDs in random order. Press CONTINUE. Tips 4 (Power) 1 2 • You can start Shuffle Play by pressing SHUFFLE while playing. • To skip a track, press )/+ on the front panel (or + on the remote). • You can specify another disc during 1 DISC Shuffle Play. Turn the jog dial to specify the next disc.
Programming the CD tracks 4 Press =/0 or )/+ until the desired track number appears. When the disc you select has Disc Memo, it appears and then switches to the following display. –– Program Play You can make a program containing up to 32 “steps”, each “step” may contain either an individual track or an entire disc. The program is stored automatically.

When you insert a disc into the PLUS ONE slot, you can play the disc independently from other discs.

Notes 9 41 • Activating Plus One Play during the program play mode automatically switches the unit to continuous play mode. • Plus One Play will be canceled if; — you turn the jog dial or press buttons to select other disc. — you press PROGRAM, MEMO SCAN, MEMO SEARCH, or GROUP 1-5. • The PLUS ONE slot comes to the loading position automatically if you open the front cover during Plus One Play.
4 Storing specific tracks (Delete bank) Press CLEAR to delete the track. “OFF” appears next to the track number. You can delete unwanted tracks and store only the tracks you want. When you select the disc containing a Delete Bank, you can play only the remaining tracks.
5 Grouping your favorite CDs Playing a group — Group File You can file the discs into different groups and then play the grouped discs. Discs can be filed into only one group at a time. No more than 51 discs (total) can be filed. (Power) CLEAR Repeat steps 2 to 4 to file other discs. 1 Press the group key corresponding to the group you want to play. The indicator on the group key lights up. 2 CD (P 1 3 4 2 Press CD (P to start playing the discs in the selected group.
3 Labeling a CD “DISC MEMO” flashes in the display. To label a group (1~5) instead of the current disc, turn the jog dial to display the corresponding group number. — Disc Memo You can label each disc using up to 11 characters. When you select a CD-TEXT disc, the first 11 characters of the disc title are stored as a disc memo. Whenever you load the labeled CD, the label (Disc Memo) appears in the display. Playing highlights of the CD Some CD-TEXT discs have a feature to play only the highlights of the discs. For MHC-F250AV · CD ( ª · ª · =/+ 0/) HI LIGHT For MHC-FR10 and MHC-F150 =/+ 0/) HI-LIGHT CD ( 36 / Press HI-LIGHT on the remote in the stop mode. “HI-LIGHT” flashes while playing disc highlights. Tips • During play of disc highlights, you can return to normal play by pressing CD ( or 0 or ) on the remote.
The Tape Deck Recording on a tape manually 4 Press DIRECTION repeatedly to select A to record on one side. Select ß (or RELAY) to record on both sides. You can record from CD, tape, or radio as you like. For example, you can record just the songs you want or record from the middle of the tape. DJ Effects Looping part of a CD Flashing part of a CD — Loop — Flash With the loop function, you can repeat part of a CD during playback. This lets you create original recordings. With the flash function, you can “flash” the CD sound during playback. This lets you create original recordings. (Power) Jog dial LOOP / Press and hold LOOP during playback at the point you want to start the Loop function, and release to resume normal play.
Sound Adjustment Adjusting the sound You can reinforce the bass, create a more powerful sound, and listen with headphones. (Power) DBFB GROOVE Notes • With some songs, the music will sound distorted when you use the DBFB system with the graphic equalizer if the bass is too strong. Adjust the bass slowly while listening to music so that you can monitor the effect of the adjustment. • Cancelling GROOVE sets DBFB to “DBFB ” and flattens the equalizer curve.
Selecting the audio emphasis The audio emphasis menu lets you select the sound characteristic according to the sound you are listening to. Selecting the surround effect MHC-FR10 and MHC-F150 SUR (Power) You can enjoy surround effects. MHC-F250AV (Power) DSP / Press SUR to turn the surround effect on or off. Every time you press the button, the display changes as follows: n SURROUND ON (SUR µ SURROUND OFF (off) / Press DSP repeatedly to select the surround effect you desire. SURROUND ON: Reproduces stereo sources in surround sound. HALL: Reproduces the acoustics of a concert hall.* THEATER: Reproduces the acoustics of a movie theater.
Enjoying Dolby Pro Logic Surround sound (For MHC-F250AV only) You can enjoy the Dolby Pro Logic Surround sound of videos that are Dolby Surround encoded (q). Complete the setup and adjustments first (see page 7). (Power) PRO LOGIC / Press PRO LOGIC (or PRO LOGIC ON/OFF on the remote) while playing a program source. The indicator on the front panel’s PRO LOGIC button lights up.
Other Features Using the Radio Data System (RDS) (For European model only) What is the Radio Data System? Radio Data System (RDS) is a broadcasting service that allows radio stations to send additional information along with the regular program signal. This tuner offers convenient RDS features like station name display and location of stations by program type. RDS is available only on FM stations.

The unit starts searching the preset RDS stations (“SEARCH” and the selected program type are shown alternately in the display). Falling asleep to music Waking up to music — Sleep Timer You can wake up to music at a preset time every day. Make sure you have set the clock (see “Step 3: Setting the time”). — Wake-up Timer You can let the system turn off at the preset time, so you can sleep to the music. Additional Information Precautions Notes on CDs Before operating the system, check that the operating voltage of your system is identical with the voltage of your local power supply. • Before playing, clean the CD with a cleaning cloth. Wipe the CD from the center out. • Do not use solvents such as benzene, thinner, commercially available cleaners or anti-static spray intended for vinyl LPs.
Before placing a cassette in the tape deck Take up any slack in the tape. Otherwise the tape may get entangled in the parts of the tape deck and become damaged. When using a tape longer than 90 minutes The tape is very elastic. Do not change the tape operations such as play, stop, and fast-winding etc. frequently. The tape may get entangled in the tape deck. Troubleshooting If you run into any problem using this stereo system, use the following check list.
Troubleshooting (continued) There is severe hum or noise. •A TV or VCR is placed too close to the stereo system. Move the stereo system away from the TV or VCR. The sound from the connected source is distorted. •If “VIDEO” appears in the display when you press FUNCTION, switch the display to “MD” (See “Connecting a VCR” on page 15). “0:00” (or “12:00”) flashes in the display. •A power interruption occurred. Set the clock and timer settings again. The timer does not function. •Set the clock correctly.
Tape Deck Tuner The tape does not record. •No tape in the cassette holder. •The tab has been removed from the cassette (see “To save a tape permanently” on page 52). •The tape has reeled to the end. Severe hum or noise (“TUNED” or “STEREO” flashes in the display). •Adjust the antenna. •The signal strength is too weak. Connect the external antenna. The tape does not record nor play or there is a decrease in sound level. •The heads are dirty. Clean them (see “Cleaning the tape heads” on page 53).
