Read this first On this “First Step Guide” This “First Step Guide” describes the connections and settings required to use your camcorder with a computer, and the basic operation of the software on the CD-ROM. The CD-ROM contains the Picture Motion Browser application for the Windows OS. You cannot use Picture Motion Browser on a Macintosh computer. Notes z The screenshots in this “First Step Guide” are from Windows XP. The screens may vary depending on the operating system of the computer.

Read this first Picture Motion Browser features Picture Motion Browser is a set of Windows applications with the following features. If you double-click the [ ] (Picture Motion Browser) icon on the desktop, [Picture Motion Browser] starts up. Notes z The picture may not play back smoothly, depending on specifications of your computer. For details about the recommended specifications, see “System requirements.” z You cannot use Picture Motion Browser on a Macintosh computer.
Chapter 1: Setting up for the first time Preparation flow This gives you an overview of the preparation necessary for the first time you use your camcorder with a Windows computer. 1 If you have not installed the supplied software, install it on your computer. See “Step 1: Installing software.” If you already installed the software according to the Operating Guide supplied with your camcorder, you do not need to install the software again.
Chapter 1: Setting up for the first time Step 1: Installing software You need to install the software to your Windows computer to enjoy editing your recorded videos and still images. The installation is required only for the first time. 1 Confirm that your camcorder is not connected to the computer. 2 Turn on the computer. Log on as Administrators for installation. Close all applications running on the computer before installing the software. 3 Place the CD-ROM in the disc drive of your computer.
6 Click [Next]. 7 Read [License Agreement], select [I accept the terms of the license agreement] when you agree, then click [Next]. 8 Select your camcorder video system, then click [Next]. 9 Select where to save the software, then click [Next].
10 Click [Install] on the [Ready to Install the Program] screen. The installation of Picture Motion Browser starts. 11 The following installation screens may be displayed, depending on your operating environment. Chapter 1: Setting up for the first time Step 2: Connecting with a USB cable The following section describes how to connect your camcorder to a computer using a USB cable and make the computer recognize your camcorder. Connection image (USB cable and USB jack) Before performing the following procedure, make sure you have installed Picture Motion Browser on your computer.
To use still images in a “Memory Stick Duo”, select [ When you select [ COMPUTER]. COMPUTER] The first time you connect your camcorder to a computer and select [ COMPUTER], it takes some time until the computer recognizes your camcorder. When the computer recognizes your camcorder, the connection is completed and [HDD Handycam Utility] window is displayed automatically. Note z Depending on the status of the computer, a window that urges you to restart the computer may be displayed.
Notes z Do not disconnect the USB cable while the access lamp is lit. z Before turning off your camcorder, disconnect the USB cable following the proper procedures described above. z Disconnect the USB cable using the proper procedures described above. Otherwise, files stored on the hard disk of your camcorder or in a “Memory Stick Duo” may not be updated correctly. Also, disconnecting the USB cable improperly may cause a malfunction of the hard disk of your camcorder or of the “Memory Stick Duo.
Chapter 2: Creating a disc with One Touch Types of discs you can use The kinds of disc that you can use with the supplied software are as listed below. The discs you can use differ, depending on the computer you use. For details on the discs compatible with your computer, refer to the operations manual supplied with your computer. You may not be able to play back some types of discs, depending on the device you have.
Chapter 2: Creating a disc with One Touch Saving videos and still images on a disc with One Touch (One Touch Disc Burn) You can save videos and still images recorded on the hard disk of your camcorder on a disc in your computer by pressing the DISC BURN button on your camcorder (One Touch Disc Burn function) without any complex operations on your computer.
When the disc type is recognized, disc creation begins. Current status of all disc creation Current status per disc Number of discs required Number of discs being created When the disc creation is completed, the disc tray opens automatically. Notes z During disc creation, do not apply vibration to the camcorder. The disc creation may be terminated. z Make sure no other USB devices are connected to your computer.
4 Connect the camcorder with a computer using the USB cable. The [USB SELECT] screen is displayed on the LCD screen of your camcorder. 5 Select [Disc Burn] on the LCD screen of your camcorder. The disc recognition window is displayed on the screen of the computer. When the disc type is recognized, the disc creation begins. To select [One Touch Disc Burn] option from the HDD Handycam Utility of a computer 1 Turn on the computer.
Chapter 3: Importing/viewing videos and still images on a computer Importing entire videos and still images on a computer (Easy PC Back-up) You can import videos and still images recorded on the hard disk of your camcorder to a computer with a simple operation using the Easy PC Back-up function of the HDD Handycam Utility. Videos and still images recorded on the hard disk of your camcorder that have not yet been imported to a computer can automatically be imported to your computer.
location is set as the [My Pictures] folder. 7 Click [Import]. Videos and images that have not been imported to a computer are automatically imported to your computer. When the import of the data is completed, [Picture Motion Browser] starts up automatically and the imported videos and images are displayed in the window. Tip z While importing videos and images, do not apply vibration on the camcorder. The importing may be terminated.
Chapter 3: Importing/viewing videos and still images on a computer Importing selected videos and still images to a computer (Media File Import) You can select the desired videos and still images recorded on the hard disk of your camcorder and import them to a computer. 1 Turn on the computer. 2 Connect your camcorder to a power source, and turn on your camcorder. Use the AC Adaptor as the power source. For operating the POWER switch, refer to the Operating Guide.
7 Select the videos and still images you want to import. Click the check box at the top left on the thumbnail images of videos and still images you want to import. If you want to import all the scenes on selected tab, click [Select All]. Tips z By switching the tabs, you can select both videos and still images at the same time. z To change the destination, click [Settings], then select the desired folder. The default location for the destination folder is set as [My Pictures].
Chapter 3: Importing/viewing videos and still images on a computer Importing images from the DVD drive/Memory Stick slot of a computer You can import the videos and still images stored on a disc or a “Memory Stick Duo” by inserting the disc/“Memory Stick Duo” into the DVD drive/Memory Stick slot of your computer. Tip z You can import the still images recorded with your camcorder on a “Memory Stick Duo” with connecting the camcorder and a computer. 1 Turn on the computer.
Click the scene thumbnail to check the box. If you want to import all the scenes, click [Select All]. 8 Click [Next]. The window used to select the destination folder for imported videos is displayed. 9 Select the destination folder for imported videos or still images. Tip z The default location for the destination folder is set as [My Pictures].

Chapter 3: Importing/viewing videos and still images on a computer Viewing videos and still images imported to a computer You can browse videos and still images imported to a computer, sorted by registered folder (Folder view), or sorted by the date and time they were taken (Calendar view). 1 Turn on the computer. 2 Double-click [ ] (Picture Motion Browser) on the desktop. [Picture Motion Browser] starts up. 3 Click [Folder] or [Calendar] on the Folder/Calendar switching tab.
When you click the month icon Tips z When you click a month on the yearly calendar, the calendar switches to the calendar of the selected month. z When you click the date on a monthly calendar, the calendar switches to a time calendar for the selected date. Thumbnails of the videos and still images taken that day are displayed, arranged according to the hour they were taken. To enlarge a video or still image Double-click the thumbnail.
To play images consecutively You can select videos and still images and play them as a slide show. Here we explain the procedure for starting a slide show by selecting videos and still images in the Calendar view. 1 Turn on the computer. 2 Double-click [ ] (Picture Motion Browser) on the desktop. [Picture Motion Browser] starts up. 3 Click [Calendar] on the Folder/Calendar switching tab. 4 Click the date when the video or still image you want to view in the slide show is taken.
Chapter 4: Editing the imported videos and still images Editing videos You can cut out only required video parts to save. 1 Turn on the computer. 2 Double-click [ ] (Picture Motion Browser) on the desktop. [Picture Motion Browser] starts up. 3 Select the video you want to edit in the Folder view or Calendar view. 4 Select [Video Trimming] in the [Manipulate] menu. When you select a video in the view image window, click [ The Video Trimming window is displayed.
6 Select the scene you want to set as an OUT point (the end of the required part) in the same way, and click [Set OUT point]. The selected scene is displayed in the thumbnail of [OUT point]. 7 After setting the points, click [Save from IN to OUT]. The Save As window is displayed. The edited video file will be saved with a file name different from that of the original file name. 8 Click [Save] to save the edited video. Saving takes some time. When the saving is completed, a message is displayed.

Chapter 4: Editing the imported videos and still images Editing still images You can edit imported still images as follows. For details about the operation, refer to the Picture Motion Browser Help. Automatic Correction Automatically corrects the brightness and contrast to the most suitable levels for that image. Correcting brightness and contrast The brightness and contrast of still images can be corrected. You can also correct only dark or light areas.
Chapter 5: Creating and copying a disc Creating a disc with HD (High Definition) picture quality You can create an HD (High Definition) picture quality disc with an additional menu by putting together AVCHD 1080i format videos imported to your computer. Tip z The selected videos are written to the disc as they are. If there are unnecessary scenes in the video, edit it beforehand. Notes z AVCHD1080i format videos with HD (High Definition) image quality can be written on AVCHD format discs.
5 Confirm the videos to be written to the disc. Videos with checkmarks at the top right are written to the disc in the date and time stamp order. If you want to write all the videos, click [Select All]. Tip z To add more videos to the previously selected videos, select the video you want to add in the image display area of the main window and drag and drop onto this window. 6 Click [Start]. The videos are written to the disc.
Chapter 5: Creating and copying a disc Creating a disc with SD (Standard Definition) picture quality You can create a DVD Video with SD (Standard Definition) picture quality with a DVD menu by putting together videos and still images imported to your computer. Tip z The selected videos are written to the disc as they are. If there are unnecessary scenes in the video, edit it beforehand. Note z You can select AVCHD 1080i format video to record with SD (Standard Definition) picture quality.

Chapter 5: Creating and copying a disc Creating a disc with saved videos from the Playlist on your camcorder (Playlist Disc Creation) You can save videos listed in a Playlist on the hard disk of your camcorder on a disc using [Playlist Disc Creation] in the HDD Handycam Utility. Notes z Player for AVCHD or equipment that is compatible with the AVCHD format is needed to play back AVCHD format discs you have created with videos included in a HD Playlist.
9 Confirm the videos to write to a disc. Videos with checkmarks at the top right are written on the disc in the Playlist order. 10 Click [Next]. When you select [HD Playlist], jump to step 12. When you select [SD Playlist], the menu selection window of the disc is displayed. 11 Select a menu design and a title creation method, and enter the disc name. Chapter 5: Creating and copying a disc Copying a disc You can copy the images recorded on a disc to another disc. You can also back up a disc and create a disc playable on other DVD players from an AVCHD format disc by converting it to DVD Video. This procedure describes how to copy the images recorded on a -RW (12 cm) disc to a -R (12 cm) disc in the DVD drive of your computer.
To change the location for temporary files and the writing speed On the Disc copy window, click [Settings...]. Select [Manually select a writing speed before writing to the disc] and click [OK] to specify the writing speed each time, before writing starts. Tip z Depending on the capacity of the source disc, the free space required on your hard disk for temporary files varies.
Chapter 5: Creating and copying a disc Types of discs you can use This section explains about discs you can use for backing up a disc or creating a disc playable on other DVD players. The types of discs that can be used ( ) for copying vary depending on the type of disc used to make the source disc and the recorded video quality level of the source disc. For details, refer to the charts below.
Chapter 6: Viewing an AVCHD format disc on a computer Playing an AVCHD format disc with Player for AVCHD You can view videos on an AVCHD format disc on the DVD drive of your computer. Note z The picture may not play back smoothly, depending on the specifications and performances of your computer. 1 Turn on the computer. 2 Insert an AVCHD format disc into the DVD drive of your computer. Player for AVCHD starts up automatically.
To change the DVD drive used for playback Click [ [OK]. ] and select [Settings]. The drive-selection window is displayed.
Chapter 7: Exporting videos to your camcorder Exporting AVCHD 1080i format videos saved on a computer to your camcorder You can export AVCHD 1080i format videos saved on a computer to the hard disk of your camcorder. 1 Turn on the computer. 2 Connect your camcorder to a power source, and turn on your camcorder. Use the AC Adaptor as the power source. For operating the POWER switch, refer to the Operating Guide. 3 Connect the camcorder with a computer using the USB cable.
Chapter 8: Manipulating videos and still images Saving videos after converting format You can convert the format of video and audio taken with your camcorder to more versatile format. 1 Turn on the computer. 2 Double-click [ ] (Picture Motion Browser) on the desktop. [Picture Motion Browser] starts up. 3 Select the video you want to convert in the Folder view or Calendar view. You can select two or more videos. 4 Select [Convert to MPEG-2 and Save] in the [Manipulate] menu.
6 Click [Start]. The video file is converted and saved in the specified location.
Chapter 8: Manipulating videos and still images Manipulating still images You can manipulate imported still images as follows. For details about the operation, refer to the Picture Motion Browser Help. Printing still images You can print imported still images. Tip z You can save a scene you select from the video as a still image and print it. Sending still images by e-mail You can start your e-mail software, attach still images to e-mail and send them via e-mail.
Troubleshooting Symptoms When using the videos stored on the hard disk of your camcorder, a computer does not recognize the camcorder. You cannot use the supplied software, Picture Motion Browser on the Macintosh computer. The One Touch Disc Burn function does not work. You cannot view the videos of your camcorder with a computer. You cannot view the still images recorded on a “Memory Stick Duo” on the computer. The “Memory Stick” icon ([Removable Disk]) does not appear on the computer screen.
Troubleshooting Cause and/or corrective actions When using the videos on a disc, a computer does not recognize your camcorder. Install Picture Motion Browser. Disconnect the USB device other than the keyboard, the mouse, and the camcorder from the computer. Disconnect the cable from the computer and camcorder, restart the computer, then connect them again correctly. Check if Media Check Tool is running on the computer.
The playback screen is paused or distorted. Check the recommended computer environment required to play videos recorded with HD (High Definition) picture quality. Close all application except Player for AVCHD on a computer. A disc cannot be played back. Use the supplied Player for AVCHD software to play a disc recorded with HD (High Definition) picture quality. A standard disc player cannot be used.
