About This Manual • Instructions in this manual describe the controls on the remote. • “DVD” may be used as a general term for commercial DVDs, DVD+RWs/DVD+Rs/DVD+Rs DL (+VR mode) and DVD-RWs/DVD-Rs/DVD-Rs DL (VR mode, video mode).

Some of the DVD functions may require pressing two buttons to operate the DVD player. For example, press then 8 to eject or reinsert the disc. Refer to the chart below for other operations.
Getting Started Attaching the DVD Player to Your TV Fixed Mounting Bracket The Fixed Mounting Bracket is recommended for smaller model size TVs. With larger TV models, the bracket may cause the player to recess behind the TV. In this case, use the supplied Adjustable Mounting Bracket illustrated on the next page. 1 2 Insert the guide pins on the bracket into the guide holes on the TV. The holes on the bracket should align to the holes on the TV.
Adjustable Mounting Bracket The Adjustable Mounting Bracket is recommended for 46” TVs or larger. Using the table below, choose the preferred position at which to secure the bracket. Adjustable Mounting Bracket Settings 1 The bracket retracts so that the DVD player is close to the edge of the TV. If the player protrudes beyond the TV at this setting, use the Fixed Mounting Bracket. 2 The bracket expands so that the DVD player is much closer to the edge of the TV. This is recommended for larger TV models.
Attaching the Mounting Bracket to the TV 1 2 With the bracket fully extended, insert the guide pins on the bracket into the guide holes on the TV. The holes on the bracket should align to the holes on the TV. Insert the 2 plastic fasteners (supplied) into the holes, then press in the head of the fasteners until they click. ~ 1 2 Do not push on the head of the plastic fastener until you have inserted it into the hole on the TV.

Configuring Your TV to Operate the DVD Player After completing all of the required connections, configure your TV to the DVD player. TVs with XMB™ TVs with Panel Menu 1 1 2 3 Press HOME on the remote control and select HDMI Settings. Select Control for HDMI or HDMI Control. Highlight On and press and exit the menu. 2 3 4 Press HOME on the remote control and select Setup. Select Control for HDMI. Highlight On and press . Highlight Update Control for HDMI List, select OK and exit the menu.
Using the Player Guide to the Control Menu Display Use the Control Menu to select a function and to view related information. Accessing the player’s Control Menu display When no disc is in the DVD player: While in TV mode with no disc inserted in the player, you can access the Control Menu to view and change settings. To access the Control Menu, identify your TV menu and follow the directions below. ~ TVs must have Control for HDMI or HDMI Control set to "On.
When a disc is inserted in the DVD player While in the DVD mode with a disc playing, press DISPLAY repeatedly to turn on or change the Control Menu display as follows: , Control Menu display 1 m Control Menu display 2 (appears for certain discs only) m Control Menu display off Control Menu display The Control Menu display 1 and 2 will show different items depending on the disc type. Example: Control Menu display 1 when playing a DVD VIDEO.
Control Icons and Descriptions Icon Item Name, Function Icon TITLE/SCENE/TRACK Selects the title, scene, or track to be played. CHAPTER/INDEX Selects the chapter or index to be played. TRACK Selects the track to be played. TIME/TEXT Checks the elapsed time and the remaining playback time. Input the time code for picture and music searching. Displays the DVD/CD text or the DATA CD/DATA DVD track/file name.
Playing Discs Depending on the DVD or disc, some operation may be different or restricted. Refer to the operating instructions supplied with your disc. To turn on and off the player -- The player is turned on automatically when the TV is powered on. -- The player enters standby mode when the TV is powered off. To begin playback Access the DVD player through the TV’s menu. The point of access will differ based on the menu type or style on your TV.
Using the DVD’s Menu Resuming Playback From A DVD VIDEO is divided into long sections of a the Point Where You picture or a music feature called “titles.” Stopped the Disc (Multi-disc 1 Press to access the DVD Menu or to access the Top Menu. Checking the Playing Time and Remaining Time Checking the play information of the disc To check the DVD/CD text You can check the playing time and remaining time of the current title, chapter, or track. Also, you can check the DVD/CD text or track name (MP3 audio) recorded on the disc. 1 Press ENT + 6 during playback. The following display appears. T 1:01:57 Time information 2 Press ENT + 6 repeatedly in step 2 to display text recorded on the DVD/CD.
Creating your own program PROGRAM (Program Play) ALL CLEAR 1. TITLE – – 2. TITLE – – 3. TITLE – – 4. TITLE – – 5. TITLE – – 6. TITLE – – 7. TITLE – – You can play the contents of a disc in the order you want by arranging the order of the titles, chapters, or tracks on the disc to create your own program. You can program up to 99 titles, chapters, and tracks. 1 2 Press DISPLAY. The Control Menu appears. C ALL 01 02 03 04 05 06 Next, press V/v to select “03” under “C,” then press .
To change or cancel a program 1 2 3 Follow steps 1 to 3 of “Creating your own program (Program Play).” Select the program number of the title, chapter, or track you want to change or cancel using B/b and press . Follow step 5 for new programming. To cancel a program, select “--” under “T,” then press . Playing in random order (Shuffle Play) Playing repeatedly (Repeat Play) You can play all of the titles or tracks on a disc, or a single title, chapter, or track repeatedly.
5 z Hint You can set Repeat Play while the player is stopped. After selecting the “REPEAT” option, press N. Repeat Play starts. ~ • When repeating a DATA CD/DATA DVD which contains MP3 audio tracks and JPEG image files, and their playing times are not the same, the sound will not match the image. • When “MODE (MP3, JPEG)” is set to “IMAGE (JPEG)” (page 44), you cannot select “TRACK.” Repeating a specific portion (A-B Repeat Play) When you reach the ending point (point B), press again.
Adjusting the Playback Picture (CUSTOM PICTURE MODE) You can adjust the video signal of the DVD or DATA CD/DATA DVD in JPEG format from the player to obtain the picture quality you want. Choose the setting that best suits the program you are watching. When you select “MEMORY,” you can make further adjustments to each element of the picture (color, brightness, etc.). 1 2 4 1 Press V/v to highlight (CUSTOM PICTURE MODE), then press . The options for “CUSTOM PICTURE MODE” appear.
Sharpening the Picture (SHARPNESS) Adjusting the Delay Between the Picture and Sound (AV SYNC) You can enhance the outlines of images to produce a sharper picture. 1 2 Press DISPLAY twice during playback. The Control Menu appears. Press V/v to highlight (SHARPNESS), then press . The options for “SHARPNESS” appear. OFF OFF 1 2 3 4 When the sound does not match the pictures on the screen, you can adjust the delay between the picture and sound. 1 2 Press DISPLAY twice during playback.
Locking Discs (CUSTOM PARENTAL 4 CONTROL, PARENTAL CONTROL) You can set two kinds of playback restrictions for a disc. • Custom Parental Control Press V/v to highlight “ON t,” then press . ◆ If you have not entered a password The display for registering a new password appears. PARENTAL CONTROL You can set playback restrictions so that the player will not play inappropriate discs. Enter a new 4-digit password.
To play a disc for which Custom Parental Control is set 1 Insert the disc for which Custom Parental Control is set. The “CUSTOM PARENTAL CONTROL” display appears. Parental Control (limited playback) Playback of some DVD VIDEOs can be limited according to a predetermined level such as the age of the users. The “PARENTAL CONTROL” function allows you to set a playback limitation level. 1 CUSTOM PARENTAL CONTROL Custom parental control is already set. To play, enter your password.
6 7 8 Press V/v to highlight a geographic area as the playback limitation level, then press . The area is selected. When you select “OTHERS t,” select and enter a Parental Control Area code from the table on page 51 using the number buttons. Press V/v to highlight “LEVEL,” then press The ratings restriction options available in “LEVEL” are displayed. . Select the level you want using V/v, then press . Parental Control setting is complete. The lower the value, the stricter the limitation.
DVD Disc Operations Searching for a Particular Point on a Disc (Scan, Slow-motion Play, Freeze Frame) You can quickly locate a particular point on a disc by monitoring the picture or playing back slowly. ~ • Depending on the disc, you may not be able to do some of the operations described. • This section applies to DVD-Video discs; however, you can also use this feature to search for a point in MP3 playback. • Scan speeds may vary depending on the disc.
To search for a scene using the time code (DVD only) Select “TIME/TEXT” to search for a starting point by putting in the time code. 1 2 3 In step 2, highlight TIME/TEXT. “T **:**:**” (playing time of the current title) is selected. Press . “T **:**:**” changes to “T --:--:--.” Input the time code using the number buttons, then press . For example, to find the scene at 2 hours, 10 minutes, and 20 seconds after the beginning, enter “2:10:20.
◆ When playing DATA CD or DATA DVD The player’s internal background sound will be played. The default setting is underlined. • • • • BGM 1 BGM 2 BGM 3 BGM 4 ~ • If “MODE (MP3, JPEG)” is set to “AUTO” or “AUTO (BGM)” (page 44), you can hear the player’s internal background sound when MP3 is not played.
Settings and Adjustments Using the Setup Menu Example: “SCREEN SETUP” Selected item By using the Setup Menu, you can make various adjustments to items such as picture and sound. You can also set a language for the subtitles and the Setup Menu, among other things. Some settings are fixed optimally for the TV; they are unselectable and appear grayed out.
To reset all of the “SETUP” settings 1 2 3 Highlight “RESET” in step 3 and press . Highlight “YES” using V/v. You can also quit the process and return to the Control Menu by selecting “NO” here. Press . All the settings explained on pages page 37 to page 41 return to the default settings. Do not press while resetting the player, which takes a few seconds to complete.
Settings for the Display JPEG RESOLUTION (SCREEN SETUP) Selects the type of JPEG resolution so that you can enjoy high picture quality via your HDMI connection. You cannot select this when “HDMI RESOLUTION” is set to “720 × 480p” Choose settings according to the TV to be connected. Select “SCREEN SETUP” in the Setup Menu. To use the menu, see “Using the Setup Menu”. The default settings are underlined. Some settings are fixed optimally for the TV and are unselectable.
YCBCR/RGB (HDMI) Custom Settings This setting is automatically set to YCBCR. (CUSTOM SETUP) YCBCR Outputs YCBCR signals. BACKGROUND This setting is automatically set to JACKET PICTURE JACKET PICTURE Select “CUSTOM SETUP” in the Setup Menu. To use the menu, see “Using the Setup Menu” (page 37). The default settings are underlined. The jacket picture (still picture) appears, but only when the jacket picture is already recorded on the disc and appears when the DVD player is in stop mode.
MULTI-DISC RESUME (DVD VIDEO only) Settings for the Sound Switches the Multi-disc Resume setting on or off. Resume playback can be stored in memory for up to 6 different DVD VIDEOs. (AUDIO SETUP) ON Stores the resume setting in memory for up to 6 discs. OFF Does not store the resume setting in memory. Playback restarts at the resume point only for the current disc in the player. “AUDIO SETUP” allows you to set the sound according to the playback and connection conditions.
MP3 Audio and JPEG Images About MP3 Audio Tracks and JPEG Image Files MP3 is audio compression technology that satisfies the ISO/IEC MPEG regulations. JPEG is image compression technology. You can play DATA CDs/DATA DVDs that contain MP3 audio tracks or JPEG image files.
z Hints • If you add numbers (01, 02, 03, etc.) to the front of the track/file names when you store the tracks (or files) in a disc, the tracks and files will be played in that order. • Since a disc with many trees takes longer to start playback, it is recommended that you create albums with no more than two trees. • Depending on the software you use to create the DATA CD/DATA DVD, the playback order may differ from the above illustration.
