Getting Started Step 1: Hooking up the system Perform the following procedure 1 to 5 to hook up your system using the supplied cords and accessories. If you set up the stereo system vertically Be sure to place the A/V control amplifier on top of the CD player/MD deck.
1 Connect the flat cord to the SYSTEM CONTROL connectors until it clicks. 3 Connect the FM/AM aerials. Set up the AM loop aerial, then connect it. Jack type A To disconnect Extend the FM lead aerial horizontally. AM FM CO 75 Ω AXI AL Getting Started AM loop aerial 2 Connect the front speakers. Connect the speaker cords to the FRONT SPEAKER terminals as shown below. Keep the speaker cords away from the aerials to prevent noise. Insert only the stripped portion.
Step 1: Hooking up the system (continued) 4 For models with a voltage selector, set To attach the front speaker pads Attach the supplied front speaker pads to the bottom of the speakers to stabilize the speakers and prevent them from slipping. Step 2: Setting the time Press ENTER. The minute indication flashes. 4 Press V or v to set the minute. 5 Press ENTER. The clock starts. Getting Started You must set the time beforehand to use the timer functions. The clock is on a 24-hour system for the European model, and a 12-hour system for other models. The 24-hour system is used for illustration purposes. 3 Tips • If you’ve made a mistake, start over from step 1. • Setting the time deactivates the demo mode.
Step 3: Presetting radio stations You can preset the following number of stations: 20 for FM, 10 for AM. ?/1 (Power) 2 1 3 4 Press ENTER. “Complete!” appears and the station is stored. 5 Repeat steps 1 to 4 to preset other stations. To tune in a station with a weak signal Press + or – repeatedly in step 2 to tune in the station manually. To set another station to the exist preset number Start over from step 1.
To change the AM tuning interval (except for European model) Tip (European model only) You can lower the power consumption to a minimum (Power Saving Mode) and save energy in the standby mode. ?/1 (Power) DISPLAY Getting Started The AM tuning interval is factory set to 9 kHz (10 kHz in some areas). To change the AM tuning interval, tune in any AM station first, then turn off the system. While holding down the TUNER MEMORY, turn the system back on.
Basic Operations Saving the power in standby mode (continued) Tips • Each time you press POWER SAVE/DEMO (STANDBY) in the Power Saving Mode, the display switches between the Power Saving Mode and the demo mode. • ?/1 indicator and timer indicator (when the timer is set) light up even in the Power Saving Mode. • The timer works in the Power Saving Mode. Playing a CD — Normal play You can play up to five CDs in a row.
2 Tips Press one of the DISC 1 – 5. The disc tray closes and play starts. If you press CD H, play starts from the CD loaded on the tray whose number appears in the display. 2 Recording a CD on an MD Then press again to close the disc tray. You can make a digital recording of a CD on an MD, marking track numbers in the same sequence as the original CD. Tips Recording a CD on an MD at high speed — High-Speed CD-MD Synchro Recording This function allows you to record a CD on an MD at twice the speed of normal CD-MD Synchro Recording. Recording a CD on an MD at high speed (continued) To stop recording Press CD s or MD s. If “Retry” flashes in the display after you press MD S in step 4 A reading failure has occurred, and the MD deck is trying to read the data again. • If the retry was successful, the MD deck continues with High-Speed CD-MD Synchro Recording. In this case, “×2” lights up in the display. • If the condition of the inserted CD or the MD deck is poor, and retry fails, High-Speed CDMD Synchro Recording is disabled.

Turn counterclockwise for lower preset numbers. Basic Operations You can analog record a radio programme on an MD. If you use a partially recorded MD, recording starts after the recorded tracks.
The CD Player Recording from the radio (continued) Tips • If noise is heard while recording an AM radio programme, move the AM loop aerial to reduce the noise or connect a ground wire to the U terminal (see page 68). • You can record the MD in monaural format. For details, see “Monaural recording” on page 39. • You can adjust the recording level to the desired volume (see page 37).
To cancel Repeat Play Press REPEAT/PTY (European model) or REPEAT (other models) until “REPEAT” or “REPEAT 1” disappears. Note ALL DISCS repeat cannot be used during Shuffle Play. Using the CD display You can check the total number of tracks, the total playing time and the remaining time on the current track or on the CD. When a CD TEXT disc is loaded, you can check the information recorded on the disc, such as the titles or artist names. ?/1 (Power) DISPLAY Tips • You can check a track title at any time during play. If you press SCROLL on the remote for a CD with CD TEXT, a track title appears scrolling in the display.
The MD Deck — Play Playing MD tracks repeatedly — Repeat Play Playing MD tracks in random order — Shuffle Play You can repeat an MD in normal play, Shuffle Play and Programme Play. The MD Deck — Recording Before you start recording MDs (Mini Disc) let you digitally record and play music with high quality sound. Another feature of MDs is track marking. The track marking feature lets you quickly locate a specific point or easily edit the recorded tracks. However, depending on the source you record, the recording method and the way the track numbers are recorded differ.
Recording your favourite CD tracks on an MD — CD-MD Synchro Recording You can select your favourite CD tracks with the Programme Play feature, then record the programme on an MD using the CD-MD Synchro Recording feature. If you use a partially recorded MD, recording starts after the recorded tracks. ?/1 (Power) 4 2 1 5 Selecting the tracks 1 Press CD to switch the function to CD. 2 Press PLAY MODE repeatedly until “PROGRAM” appears. 3 Press one of the DISC 1 – 5 to select a CD.
Recording on an MD 7 Insert a recordable MD. 8 Press CD SYNC NORMAL. The MD deck stands by for recording and the CD player pauses for play. 9 Recording the current track — REC IT You can record a track quickly while listening to a CD. If the MD has been partially recorded, recording starts after the recorded tracks. Press MD S. 1 Recording starts. Recording for long times 1 In addition to normal stereo recording, this system has two long time modes: LP2 and LP4. When recording in LP2 mode, you can record 2 times the normal recordable time, and in LP4 mode, you can record 4 times the normal recordable time. In addition, the recordable time for monaural recording is approximately double the stereo recording time.
Notes Recording on an MD manually — Manual Recording If you use a partially recorded MD, recording starts after the recorded tracks. 2 ?/1 (Power) 1 2 3 4 5 3 4 The MD Deck — Recording • The recorded “LP:” is a stamp which appears to indicate that the MD cannot be played back when you try to play the MD on system that does not support MD LP mode. It does not appear for systems that support MD LP mode.
Recording on an MD manually (continued) 5 Start playing the desired source (e.g., CD) to record. When recording from this system’s CD player, the track numbers are automatically marked. Press REC/REC IT during recording to mark the track numbers at the desired point. If you want to mark track numbers automatically during recording from the radio, see “Marking track numbers” on page 34. To stop recording Press MD s.
5 2 ?/1 (Power) Press ENTER/YES at the desired point to start recording. Recording of the source starts with the 6 seconds of audio data stored in the buffer memory. If you use a partially recorded MD, recording starts after the recorded tracks. To stop Time Machine Recording Press MD s. Marking track numbers ?/1 (Power) 1 3,4,5 You can mark track numbers: • Automatically during recording Track numbers are automatically marked as on the original source during recording from this system’s CD player. However, track numbers may not be marked for some tracks (see page 71). Use the Level Synchro Recording function to automatically mark track numbers during recording from this system’s tuner or components connected to the VIDEO jacks or the TAPE IN jacks.
4 Turn MD JOG until “T.Mark Off” appears, then press ENTER/YES. 5 Turn MD JOG until “T.Mark LSync” appears, then press ENTER/YES. “L-SYNC” lights up. Marking track numbers at a specific point during recording — Track Mark You can mark track numbers at any time during recording, regardless of the type of sound source. 1 6 2 Press MENU/NO. 3 4 5 7 Press MD S. 7 Making a space between tracks 3 seconds long MD s 3,4,5 1 2 3 4 5 — Smart Space, Auto Cut The Smart Space function lets you make the blank spaces between tracks 3 seconds long automatically. If the Smart Space function is on and there is no sound input for about 3 seconds or more (but less than about 30 seconds) while recording, the MD deck replaces this silence with a blank of about 3 seconds and continues recording.
6 Press MENU/NO. 7 Press MD S. When recording on an MD, you can adjust the recording level to the desired volume. You can adjust the recording level not only when making an analogue recording, but also when making a digital recording from a CD, etc. Note During Synchro-recording, the recording level is fixed at 0.0 dB regardless of the setting. ?/1 (Power) 1 4,5,7 To stop recording Press MD s. To turn off Smart Space and Auto Cut functions 1 Press MENU/NO during recording pause.
Adjusting the recording level (continued) 2 Press MD s. Tips Confirm that the MD deck is in recording standby. If not, press REC/REC IT. 3 Prepare the sound source and start play. 4 Press MENU/NO. “Setup?” appears, then press ENTER/YES. 5 Turn MD JOG until “LevelAdjust?” appears, then press ENTER/YES. 6 Turn MD JOG to adjust the recording level. You can roughly adjust the recording level by pressing MD m or M. The recording level can be adjusted from –∞ to +18.0 dB.
Monaural recording 2 Press one of the function buttons you want to record (e.g., TUNER). Stereo signals such as an FM stereo broadcast can be converted to monaural format and recorded. When recording in monaural format, the MD recording time is approximately twice the normal recording (stereo recording) time (i.e., 120 minutes of monaural audio can be recorded on a 60-minute MD). 3 Press REC/REC IT. ?/1 (Power) 2 The MD deck stands by for recording. 4 Press MD S. Recording starts.
The MD Deck — Editing Before you start editing You can edit the recorded tracks on an MD. By using the editing functions, you can create a new sequence to the recorded MD. Editing functions • Name — Labelling MDs (page 41) Use this function to label discs and tracks. You can use upper case, lower case, numbers, and symbols for the titles. • Erase — Erasing recordings (page 43) Use this function to erase a single track one by one, all the tracks at once, or a portion of a track.
Labelling an MD ?/1 (Power) 1 5 — Name Function You can create titles for your recorded MDs and tracks as follows. During Synchro (normal, HighSpeed) Recording If “CD TEXT” lights up or flashes during recording, you can record the CD TEXT information onto the MD as follows: • Automatically during recording When “CD TEXT” is lit, the CD TEXT information is automatically recorded.
Labelling an MD (continued) 3 7 The titles you labelled appear sequentially, and then the original display appears. Press CHARACTER to select the desired type of character. Each time you press the button, the display changes as follows: (Blank space) t A (Upper cases) t a (Lower cases) t 0 (Number) t ’ (Symbols) t (Blank space) t … 4 Press ENTER/YES to complete the labelling procedure. To cancel labelling Press MENU/NO. Notes • You can label a track title during play.
Checking the titles To check the disc titles, press SCROLL on the remote in stop mode. To check the track title, press SCROLL during play. The title appears scrolling in the display. To stop scrolling, press SCROLL. Press the button again to resume scrolling. Erasing the titles Erasing recordings — Erase Function The MD deck lets you erase unwanted tracks quickly and easily. You can restore the contents to the condition before erasing (unerase) by using the Undo function.
Erasing recordings (continued) ?/1 (Power) 1 3,5 5 Press ENTER/YES. “Complete!” appears for a few seconds and the selected track and title are erased. To cancel erasing Press MENU/NO. To return to the condition before erasing You can return to the original condition immediately after erasing the tracks (see page 51). Note “Erase???” appears when the track was recorded or edited on another deck and is protected. To erase the track, press ENTER/YES while “Erase???” appears.

To cancel erasing 1 2 Press MENU/NO. 3 4 You can return to the original condition immediately after erasing the tracks (see page 51).
Erasing recordings (continued) 4 Press ENTER/YES again. “—Rehearsal—” and “Point A ok?” appear alternately while the deck repeats the portion from a few seconds before point A to point A. 5 While monitoring the sound, turn MD JOG to find the starting point of the portion to be erased (point A). You can shift the starting point by 1/86 second (1 frame)* intervals. To shift the point by minute or second intervals, press MD m or M so that minute or second flashes, then turn MD JOG.
Moving recorded tracks 1 Press MD to switch the function to MD. — Move Function 2 Press MENU/NO to display “Edit Menu”. You can use this function to change the order of any track on the disc. When you move tracks, the tracks are automatically renumbered. 3 Turn MD JOG until “Move?” appears, then press ENTER/YES. 4 Turn MD JOG until the desired track number to move appears, then press ENTER/YES. 5 Turn MD JOG until the new track position appears. E.g.: Moving track 3 to position 2.
Dividing recorded tracks 1 Press MD to switch the function to MD. — Divide Function 2 Press MENU/NO to display “Edit Menu”. You can use this function to mark track numbers after recording. The total number of tracks increases by one and all the tracks following the divided ones are renumbered. 3 Turn MD JOG until “Divide?” appears, then press ENTER/YES. E.g.: Dividing track 2 into two tracks. 4 Turn MD JOG until the desired track number to divide appears, then press ENTER/YES.
Notes • If you divide a labelled track (page 41) into two tracks, only the first track retains the track title. E.g.: 1 2 3 4 Andante Adagio 1 2 Allegro 3 Andante Adagio 4 5 Allegro The new track is not labelled • “Impossible” appears, when you specify the division point at the beginning or end of a track. Turn MD JOG to shift the position. Combining recorded tracks — Combine Function You can use this function to combine 2 tracks into a single track.

Second track number to be combined 6 New track number Press ENTER/YES. “Complete!” appears for a few seconds and the tracks are combined. Play starts. To cancel combining 1 Press MENU/NO. 2 3 4 5 To return to the condition before COMBINE You can return to the original condition immediately after combining the tracks (see page 51).
Undoing the last edit 3 Press ENTER/YES. One of the following messages appears, depending on the last edit. — Undo Function Editing done You can use this function to cancel the last edit and restore the contents of the MD to the condition before the edit. Note, however, that you cannot undo an edit if you do any of the following after the edit: Message Labelling a track or an MD Copying a disc title or a track title “Name Undo?” Erasing labelled titles • Do another edit.
Changing the recorded level after recording — S.F Edit Function You can change the volume of recorded tracks using S.F (Scale Factor) Edit. The original track is recorded over at the new recording level. When changing the recording level, you can select Fade -in Recording to gradually increase the signal level at the start of recording, or Fade-out Recording to gradually decrease the signal level at the end of the recording.
Fade-in and Fade-out Recording 1 Press MD to switch the function to MD. 2 Press S.F EDIT. “S.F Edit” appears in the display. 3 Turn MD JOG until “Fade In?” or “Fade Out?” appears, then press ENTER/YES. 4 Turn MD JOG until the track number you want to change the recording level appears, then press ENTER/YES. “Time 5.0s” appears in the display. While monitoring the sound, turn MD JOG to change the Fade-in or Fade-out recording time.
Sound Adjustment Adjusting the sound You can reinforce the bass, create a more powerful sound, and listen with headphones. ?/1 (Power) DBFB For a powerful sound (GROOVE) Press GROOVE. The volume switches to power mode, DBFB is automatically set to full strength, the equalizer curve changes, and GROOVE button lights up. Press GROOVE again to return to the previous volume. Notes • With some songs, the music will sound distorted when you use the DBFB system with the sound effect if the bass is too strong.
Selecting the audio emphasis The audio emphasis menu lets you select the sound characteristic according to the sound you are listening to. Selecting the effect from the music menu ?/1 (Power) 1 To cancel the effect Press EFFECT on the remote repeatedly so that “EFFECT OFF” appears in the display. Music menu options “ SUR ” appears if you select an effect with surround effects.
Changing the brightness of the display Selecting surround effects You can enjoy changing the brightness of the display while listening to the music. You can enjoy surround effects. DIMMER SURROUND , Press DIMMER on the remote. Every time you press the button, the display changes as follows: DIMMER ON Y DIMMER OFF , Press SURROUND repeatedly to select the surround effect you desire.
Adjusting the graphic equalizer You can adjust the sound by raising or lowering the levels of specific frequency ranges. Before operation, first select the audio emphasis you want for your basic sound. 3 2 EFFECT 1 Select the audio emphasis you want for your basic sound (see “Selecting the audio emphasis” on page 55). 2 Press GEQ. 3 Press B or b (or m/M on the unit) to select frequency, press V or v (or turn the jog dial on the unit) for the desired frequency band to adjust level.
Making a personal audio emphasis file — Personal file You can create a personal file of audio patterns (surround effect and graphic equalizer) and store them in the memory of the system. Later call up an audio pattern to play a favourite MD, CD, or radio programme. Create up to five audio files. Before operation, first select the audio emphasis you want for your basic sound. 2 Press P FILE. The personal file number flashes in the display.
Other Features Labelling the preset stations — Station Name You can label each preset station with up to 12 characters (Station Name). The Station Name appears when you tune in the station. ?/1 (Power) 3 3 Press TUNER NAME. The text input screen appears, and the cursor flashes. 4 Press CHARACTER on the remote repeatedly to select the desired type of character.
Labelling the preset stations (continued) To cancel labelling Press TUNER NAME. To check the preset number and frequency The station name appears when you tuned the labelled station. To check the preset number and frequency, press DISPLAY. The preset number and frequency are displayed for 4 seconds and it returns to the station name display.
To check the RDS information Each time you press DISPLAY, the display changes as follows: t Station name* r Frequency r Programme type* r Clock display r Effect (P FILE) name or “EFFECT ON (OFF)” * If the RDS broadcast is not received, the station name and programme type may not appear in the display. 1 Press REPEAT/PTY while listening to the radio. 2 Turn jog dial to select the programme type you want. Using the Radio Data System (RDS) (continued) CULTURE Programmes about national or regional culture, language, and social concerns. SCIENCE Programmes about the natural sciences. VARIED Programmes containing celebrity interviews, panel games, and comedy. POP Popular music programmes. ROCK Rock music programmes. EASY MUSIC Easy listening (middle of the road music). L. CLASSICAL Classical music, such as instrumental, vocal, and choral works. S.
Falling asleep to music Waking up to music — Sleep Timer — Daily Timer You can let the system turn off at the preset time, so you can sleep to the music. You can preset the time to be turned off by 10 minutes. You can wake up to music at a preset time. Make sure you have set the clock (see page 7). 9 SLEEP , Press SLEEP repeatedly to select a desired time. 4,5,8 3 4,5,7 2 When you choose “AUTO” The system turns off when the current CD or MD finishes playback (for up to 100 minutes).

Notes • If the system is on at the preset time, the recording will not be made. • The volume is reduced to minimum during recording. • You cannot activate DAILY 1 and DAILY 2 at the same time.
Connecting a VCR You can connect a VCR to the system with a commercially available audio cord. Be sure to match the colour-coded pins to the appropriate jacks. To listen to the VCR after connecting it, press VIDEO. Connecting rear speakers Connect the speaker cords to the REAR SPEAKER terminals. AM aerial Connecting external aerials Connect a 6- to 15- meter insulated wire to the AM aerial terminal. Leave the supplied AM loop aerial connected. Additional Information Precautions On operating voltage Before operating the system, check that the operating voltage of your system is identical with the voltage of your local power supply. Notes on MDs • If you try to force the shutter open, the disc may be damaged. If the shutter opens, close it immediately without touching the disc inside. • Affix the label supplied with the disc only to the specified label indentation. Do not affix the label around the shutter or in other locations.
Precautions (continued) Cleaning the cabinet Use a soft cloth slightly moistened with mild detergent solution. To remove the speaker grille Use both hands and pull the grille straight forward to prevent the ribs from breaking. System limitations of MDs The recording system in your MD deck has the limitations described below. Note, however, that these limitations are due to the inherent nature of the MD recording system itself, not to mechanical causes.
The sound may drop-out while searching the edited tracks Tracks created through editing may exhibit sound dropout during searching because high-speed playback requires time to search for the position on the disc when the tracks are not in order.
Troubleshooting (continued) There is severe hum or noise. • A TV or VCR is placed too close to the system. Move the system away from the TV or VCR. • The A/V control amplifier is placed under the CD player/MD deck. Place the A/V control amplifier on top of the CD player/MD deck. The timer does not function. • Set the clock correctly. “SEL DAILY 1”, “SEL DAILY 2”, and “SEL MD REC” do not appear when you press TIMER SELECT. • Set the clock. • Set the timer correctly. The remote does not function.
Play does not start. • Replace the MD. • Insert the MD and leave the system turned on for a few hours until the moisture evaporates. • Press MD H to start play. The sound skips. • Replace the MD. • Try moving the system to a place without vibration (e.g., on top of a stable stand). • Try moving the speakers away from the system, or placing them on separate stands. When you listen to a track with bass sounds at high volume, the speaker vibration may cause the sound to skip.
Self-diagnosis Display This system has a Self-diagnosis display function to let you know if there is a system malfunction. The display shows a code made up of three or five letters and a message alternately to show you the problem. To solve the problem refer to the following list. If any problem persists, consult your nearest Sony dealer. C41/Cannot Copy The sound source is a copy of a commercially available music software, or you tried to record a CD-R (Recordable CD).
Disc Full! There is no time remaining on the MD. Eject The MD deck is ejecting the MD. Impossible • You tried to make an impossible editing operation. • You cannot combine the tracks due to the system limitations of MDs. Incomplete! The S.F Edit (changing the recording level after recording, Fade-in, Fade-out) operation was not performed properly because the system was moved while recording was in progress or the MD is damaged or dirty .
Self-diagnosis Display (continued) TUNER Cannot Edit You tried to label or erase a non-preset station. CD “Check” and “CD Position” appear alternately The disk could not be read properly.
