- Getting Started Using - this manual The instructions in this manual are for the four models listed in the table below. Before you start reading this manual and operating your camcorder, check the model number by looking at tile bottom of your camcorder. The DCR-TRV740 is the model used for illustration purposes. Using this manual Lens and LCD screen/finder • The LCD screen and the finder are manufactured using extremely high-precision technology so over 99.99% of the pixels are operational for effective use. However, there may be some tiny black points and/or bright points (white, red, blue or green in color) that constantly appear on the LCD screen and the finder. These points are normal in the manufacturing process and do not affect the recording in any way. • Do not let your camcorder become wet.

Step 2 Setting the date and time Set the date and time settings when you use your camcorder for the first time. "CLOCK SET" will be displayed each time that you set the POWER switch to CAMERA/MEMORY (except DCR-TRV240) unless you set the date and time settings. If you do not use your camcorder for about half a year, the date and time settings may be cleared from memory (bars may appear) because the built-in rechargeable battery installed in your camcorder will have been discharged (p. 196).

Step 3 Inserting We recommend a cassette using Hi8 Him/Digital8 []1 video cassettes. (1) Prepare the power source (p. 12). (2) Slide OPEN/EJECT in the direction of tile arrow and open the lid. Tile cassette compartment automatically lifts up and opens. (3) Insert tile cassette straight as far as possible into the cassette compartment with tile window facing up. Push tile center of the cassette back to insert. (4) Close the cassette compartment by pressing _ on tile cassette compartment.
- Recording- Basics- Recording Your camcorder a picture automatically focuses for you. (1) Remove tile lens cap by pressing both knobs on its sides and attach tile lens cap to the grip strap. (2) Install the power source and insert a cassette. See "Step 1" to" Step 3" for more information (p. 12 to 20). (3) Set the POWER switch m CAMERA while pressing the small green bu|ton. This sets your camcorder to the standby mode. (4) Open the LCD panel while pressing OPEN.
Recording a picture Note on recording mode Your camcorder records and plays back in the SP (standard play) mode and in the LP (long play) mode. Select SP or LP in the menu settings (p. 105). In the LP mode, you can record 1.5 times as long as in the SP mode. When you record a tape in the LP mode on your camcorder, we recommend that you play back the tape on your camcorder.

Recording a picture If you record pictures with the LCD panel closed, check the picture with the viewfinder. Adjust the viewfinder lens to your eyesight so that the indicators in the viewfinder come into sharp focus. Lift up the viewfinder and move the viewfinder lens adjustment lever. o Viewfinder backlight You can change the brightness of the backlight. Select VF B.L. in the menu settings (p. 105). Recording a picture Notes • Do not use the NightShot mode in bright places (e.g. outdoors in the daytime). This may cause your camcorder to malfunction. • When you keep NIGHTStIOT set to ON in normal recording, the picture may be recorded in incorrect or unnatural colors. • If focusing is difficult with the autofocus mode when using the NightShot function, focus manually. • You cannot use the Color Slow Shutter function in dark places where the illumination is 0 lux.

The last five seconds of the recorded section are played back and your camcorder returns to the standby mode. You can monitor the sound from tile speaker or headphones.
Checking recordings - END SEARCH/EDITSEARCH/Rec Review Notes • END SEARCH, EDITSEARCH and Rec Review work only fur tapes recorded in the Digital8 Et system. • If you start recording afler using the end search function, occasionally, the transition between the last scene you recorded and the next scene may not be smooth. • Once you eject the cassette after you have recorded on the tape, the end search ['unction does not work.
- Playback- Basics- Playing back a tape You can monitor the playback picture on the LCD screen. If you close the LCD panel, you can monitor the playback picture in the viewfinder. Playing back a tape Press DISPLAY on your camcorder or the Remote Commander supplied with your camcorder. The indicators appear on the screen. To make the indicators disappear, press DISPLAY again. DISPLAY About date/time and various settings Your camcorder automatically records not only pictures on the tape but also the recording data (date/time or various settings when recorded) (Data code). Use the Remote Commander for this operation.

Playing back a tape To monitor high-speed pictures while advancing or rewinding the tape (skip scan) Keep pressing _II while rewinding or _ while advancing the tape. To resume rewinding or advancing, release the button. To view pictures at slow speed (slow playback) Press I_- on the Remote Commander during playback. For slow playback in the reverse direction, press _, then press rob-on the Remote Commander. To resume normal playback, press mm,_.
Viewing recordings on TV Connect your camcorder to your TV with the A/V connecting cable supplied with your camcorder to watch playback pictures on the TV screen. You can operate the video control buttons in the same way as when you monitor playback pictures on the LCD screen. When monitoring playback pictures on the TV screer we recommend that you power your eamcorder from a wall outlet using the AC power adaptor (p. 17). Refer to the operating instructions of your TV. Open the jack cover.
- Advanced Recording Recording Operations- still images on a tape - Tape Photo recording You can record still images such as photographs. You can record about 510 images in the SP mode and about 765 images in the LP mode on a tape which can record for 60 minutes in the SP mode. Besides the operation described here, your camcorder can record still images on "Memol T Stick" s (except DCR-TRV240) (p. 124). Recording still images on a tape - Tape Photo recording To use the tape photo recording function during normal CAMERA recording You cannot check an image on the screen by pressing PHOTO lightly. Press PHOTO deeper. The still image is then recorded ['or about seven seconds, and your camcorder returns to the standby mode. Superimposing a title You can select one of eight presel titles and two custom titles (p. 60).You can also select the language, color, size and position of titles. (1) In the standby mode, press TITLE to display the title menu. Tile title menu display appears on the screen. (2) Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to select i2:1,then press tile dial. (3) Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to select the desired tide, then press the dial. Tile titles are displayed in the language you selected.
Superimposing a title To superimpose the title while you are recording Press TITLE while you are recording, and carry out steps 2 to 5. If you take three minutes or longer to enter characters in the standby mode while a cassette is in your camcorder The power automatically goes off'.
