Getting Started Hooking up the system Perform the following procedure 1 to 4 to hook up your system using the supplied cords and accessories. AM loop antenna FM antenna Right speaker Left speaker 1 Connect the speakers. Connect the speaker cords to the SPEAKER terminals as the following. 2 Connect the FM/AM antennas. Set up the AM loop antenna, then connect it.

CD Setting the clock 1 Turn on the system. 2 Press CLOCK/TIMER SET on the remote. 3 Press . or > on the remote to set Loading a CD 1 Press DISC 1 – 3 Z. The disc tray opens. 2 Place a CD with the label side up on the disc tray. the hour. 4 Press ENTER/YES. The minute indication flashes. 5 Press . or > on the remote to set the minute. 6 Press ENTER/YES. The clock starts working. If you make a mistake Press m or M on the remote repeatedly until the incorrect item flashes, then set it again.
Other Operations Playing a CD — Normal Play/Shuffle Play/Repeat Play This system lets you play the CD in different play modes. Disc tray number Track number 1 Press FUNCTION repeatedly to switch Do this Stop play Press x. Pause Press CD NX (or X on the remote). Press again to resume play. Select a track Slide the knob to L (to go forward) or to l (to go back) and release it when you locate the desired track (or press . or > on the remote).
Playing a CD (continued) Tips • You can start playing from the desired track in Normal Play or Program Play. Slide the knob to l or to L (or press . or > on the remote) until the desired track number appears after step 1. • The DISC 1 – 3 button indicator lights orange when a CD is loaded on the tray. All of the DISC 1 – 3 button indicators light orange for the first time you turn on the system, and then go out if the system determines that a CD is not loaded after the CD tray is closed, etc.
6 To program additional tracks, repeat steps 3 to 5. 7 Press CD NX (or N on the remote). Do this Cancel Program Play Press PLAY MODE/TUNING MODE repeatedly until “PROGRAM” and “SHUFFLE” disappear. Check the program Press CHECK on the remote repeatedly in stop mode. After the last track, “Check End” appears. Clear a track from the end Press CLEAR on the remote in stop mode.
Labeling a CD (continued) 5 Press . or > on the remote to select the desired character. You can also select the following symbols. ’–/,.():!?&+<>_=”;#$%@ ` To enter a blank space Press M on the remote. 6 Press M on the remote. The character you selected in step 5 stops flashing and the cursor shifts to the right. 7 Repeat steps 4 to 6 to complete the entire title. 8 Press ENTER/YES to complete the labeling procedure.
Tuner Erasing a disc title 1 Press FUNCTION repeatedly to switch the function to CD. 2 Press DISC SKIP on the remote repeatedly until the desired CD appears. 3 Press MENU/NO on the remote in stop mode. “Name Erase?” appears, then press ENTER/YES. 5 Press . or > on the remote to select the disc title you want to erase. The disc title appears scrolling in the display. “No Name” appears if no disc title is labeled. 6 Press ENTER/YES. You can preset up to 20 FM stations and 10 AM stations.
Presetting radio stations (continued) 4 Press TUNER MEMORY/DIRECTION. 5 Slide the knob to l or to L (or press m or M on the remote) repeatedly to select the desired preset number. Setting presets through manual tuning 1 Press TUNER/BAND repeatedly to select “FM” or “AM”. 2 Press PLAY MODE/TUNING MODE until “AUTO” and “PRESET” disappear. 3 Slide the knob to l or to L (or press m or M on the remote) repeatedly to tune in the desired station. Preset number 6 Press ENTER/YES.
To change the AM tuning interval (except for the European model) The AM tuning interval is factory-set to 9 kHz (10 kHz in some areas). To change the AM tuning interval, tune in any AM station first, then turn off the system. While holding REPEAT/FM MODE, turn the system back on. When you change the interval, all the AM preset stations are erased. To reset the interval, repeat the same procedure. You cannot change the AM tuning interval in the Power Saving Mode.
Listening to the radio (continued) Tips • To improve broadcast reception, adjust the supplied antennas, or connect a commercially available external antenna. • When an FM stereo program has static noise, press REPEAT/FM MODE repeatedly until “MONO” appears. There will be no stereo effect, but the reception will improve. • To tune in automatically, press PLAY MODE/ TUNING MODE repeatedly until “AUTO” appears in step 2 above, then slide the knob to m or to M (or press m or M on the remote).
Using the Radio Data System (RDS) (European model only) What is the Radio Data System? Tuner Radio Data System (RDS) is a broadcasting service that allows radio stations to send additional information along with the regular program signal. This tuner offers convenient RDS features like station name and program type* display. RDS is available only on FM stations.** Note RDS may not work properly if the station you tuned in is not transmitting the RDS signal properly or if the signal is weak.
Tape Loading a tape 1 Open the lid with your hand and insert a tape. With the side you want to play facing up To remove the tape, lift up the tape from the side as shown in the illustration. 2 Close the lid with your hand. Playing a tape You can use TYPE I (normal) tape. 1 Press FUNCTION repeatedly to switch the function to TAPE. 2 Press TUNER MEMORY/DIRECTION repeatedly until g appears to play one side or h (or j*) to play both sides. 3 Press TAPE nN (or N on the remote).
Recording to a tape — CD Synchro Recording/Recording Manually/Program Edit You can record from a CD, radio or connected components. You can use TYPE I (normal) tapes. The recording level is adjusted automatically. Steps Recording from a CD (CD Synchro Recording) 1 2 Load a recordable tape. Press DISC 1 – 3 Z. Press FUNCTION repeatedly to select the desired source to record. 3 Load the CD you want to record. Load the CD (or other audio source), or tune in the station you want to record.
Recording to a tape (continued) Recording a CD by specifying track order — Program Edit 1 Load a CD and load a recordable tape. 2 Program CD tracks following step 2 to 6 in “Programing CD tracks” on page 10. 3 Press CD SYNC. The tape deck stands by to record. The CD player stands by for playback. 4 Press TUNER MEMORY/DIRECTION repeatedly to select g to record on one side. Select h (or j) to record on both sides. 5 Press REC PAUSE/START. Recording starts.
Sound Adjustment To Do this Activate/check the setting Press CLOCK/TIMER SELECT on the remote and press . or > on the remote to select “REC SELECT?”, then press ENTER/YES. Notes Enjoying the powerful sound — GROOVE You can listen to music with more powerful sound. Press GROOVE.
Selecting the preset music menu The audio emphasis menu lets you select the sound characteristics according to the sound you are listening to. Press MUSIC MENU repeatedly to select the preset you want. The preset name appears in the display. See the chart “Music menu options”. Music menu options “SURROUND” appears if you select an effect with surround effects.
Timer Falling asleep to music Waking up to music — Daily Timer — Sleep Timer You can set the system to turn off after a certain time, so that you can fall asleep to music. Press SLEEP on the remote. Each time you press the button, the minute display (the turn-off time) changes cyclically as follows: AUTO* t 90min t 80min t … t 10min t OFF * The system automatically turns off after the current CD or tape finishes playing (up to 100 minutes).
Display Waking up to music (continued) Turning off the display 8 Press ENTER/YES. The start time, the stop time, and the sound source appear in turn, then the original display returns. 9 Press ?/1 to turn off the system. To Do this Activate/check the setting Press CLOCK/TIMER SELECT on the remote, then press . or > on the remote until “DAILY SELECT?” appears. Then, press ENTER/YES. Change the setting Start over from step 1. Cancel the timer Press CLOCK/TIMER SELECT on the remote, then press .
Using the display You can check the remaining time of the current track or the entire CD. When a CD TEXT disc is loaded, you can check the information recorded on the disc, such as the titles. Checking the station name (Tuner) Press DISPLAY.

Listening to audio from a connected component 1 Connect the audio cords. See “Hooking up optional components” on page 26. 2 Press MD (VIDEO) to switch the function to MD or VIDEO. Start playing the connected component. Recording on a connected digital component 1 Connect the digital cable. See “Hooking up optional components” on page 26. 2 Start recording. Refer to the operating instructions provided with the connected component.
Troubleshooting The timer does not function. Problems and remedies If you have any problem using this system, use the following checklist. First, check that the power cord is connected firmly and that the speakers are connected correctly and firmly. Should any problem persist, consult your nearest Sony dealer. General The display window and buttons keep on or flashing even the power is turned off.
The sound skips. • Wipe the CD clean (see page 32). • Replace the CD. • Try moving the system to a place without vibration (e.g., on top of a stable stand). • Try moving the speakers away from the system, or placing them on separate stands. • When you listen to a track with bass sounds at high volume, the speaker vibration may cause the sound to skip. Play does not start from the first track.
Problems and remedies (continued) If the system still does not operate properly after performing the above measures, reset the system as follows: 1 Unplug the power cord. 2 Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet. 3 Press ?/1 to turn on the system. 4 Press x, ?/1 and ENTER/YES at the same time. 5 Unplug the power cord. 6 Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet, then press ?/1 to turn on the system. The system is reset to the factory settings.
Additional Information On heat build up Precautions On operating voltage Before operating the system, check that the operating voltage of your system is identical with the voltage of your local power supply. On safety • The unit is not disconnected from the AC power source (mains) as long as it is connected to the wall outlet, even if the unit itself has been turned off. • Unplug the system from the wall outlet if it is not to be used for an extended period of time.
