Getting Started Hooking up the system Perform the following procedure 1 to 4 to hook up your system using the supplied cords and accessories. AM loop antenna FM antenna Right speaker Left speaker 1 Connect the speakers. Connect the speaker cords to the SPEAKER terminals as the following. 2 Connect the FM/AM antennas. Set up the AM loop antenna, then connect it.

Note If you do not use the remote for a long period of time, remove the batteries to avoid possible damage from battery leakage.
CD Setting the clock Loading a CD 1 Turn on the system. 2 Press CLOCK/TIMER SET on the remote. “CLOCK” appears. 3 Press . or > on the remote to set 1 Press Z. The disc tray opens. 2 Place a CD with the label side up on the disc tray. the hour. 4 Press ENTER. The minute indication flashes. 5 Press . or > on the remote to set When you play a CD single (8 cm CD), place it on the inner circle of the tray. the minute. 6 Press ENTER. The clock starts working.
Other Operations Playing a CD — Normal Play/Shuffle Play/Repeat Play Do this Stop play Press x. Pause Press CD NX (or X on the remote). Press again to resume play. Select a track Slide the knob to L (to go forward) or to l (to go back) and release it when you locate the desired track (or press . or > on the remote). Find a point in a track Slide and hold the knob to M or to m during play and release it at the desired point (or keep pressing m or M on the remote). Remove a CD Press Z.
To Do this Cancel Program Play Press PLAY MODE/TUNING MODE repeatedly until “PGM” and “SHUFFLE” disappear. You can make a program of up to 25 tracks. Clear a track from the end Press CLEAR on the remote in stop mode. 1 Press FUNCTION repeatedly (or press Add a track to the end of the program in stop mode Perform steps 3 and 4. Listening to the radio You can listen to a radio station either by selecting a preset station, or by manually tuning in the station. Listening to a preset station — Preset Tuning 1 Press TUNER/BAND repeatedly to • To improve broadcast reception, adjust the supplied antennas, or connect a commercially available external antenna. • When an FM stereo program has static noise, press REPEAT/FM MODE repeatedly until “MONO MODE” appears. There will be no stereo effect, but the reception will improve.
Using the Radio Data System (RDS) Simply select a station from the FM band. (European model only) When you tune in a station that provides RDS services, the station name appears in the display. What is the Radio Data System? To check the RDS information Radio Data System (RDS) is a broadcasting service that allows radio stations to send additional information along with the regular program signal. This tuner offers convenient RDS features like station name and program type* display.
Tape Loading a tape 1 Open the lid with your hand and insert a tape. With the side you want to play facing up Do this Press x. Pause Press X on the remote. Press again to resume play. Slide the knob to m or to M (or press m or M on the remote). Fast-forward or rewind Notes • If you do not close the lid, you cannot start playing the tape. • If you open the lid while playing a tape, the deck stops playing. Tuner/Tape To remove the tape, lift up the tape from the side as shown in the illustration.
Recording to a tape — CD Synchro Recording/Recording Manually/Program Edit You can record from a CD or radio (or connected components). You can use TYPE I (normal) tapes. The recording level is adjusted automatically. Steps Recording from a CD (CD Synchro Recording) 1 Load a recordable tape. 2 Press FUNCTION repeatedly to select “CD”. Press FUNCTION repeatedly to select the desired source to record. 3 Load the CD you want to record.
Recording a CD by specifying track order — Program Edit 1 Load a CD and load a recordable tape. 2 Program CD tracks following step 1 to 5 in “Programing CD tracks” on page 10. 3 Press CD SYNC. 4 Press TUNER MEMORY/DIRECTION repeatedly to select g to record on one side. Select h (or j) to record on both sides. 5 Press REC PAUSE/START. Recording starts.

Adjusting the sound Enjoying the powerful sound — GROOVE You can listen to music with more powerful sound. Press GROOVE.
Adjusting the treble 1 Press TREBLE (or press TONE on the remote repeatedly until “TREBLE” appears). 2 Slide the knob to . or to > (or press . or > on the remote) repeatedly to adjust the treble. You can adjust the treble in 11 steps (from –5 to + 5). Tip You can enjoy the original sound by setting BASS and TREBLE to 0. Selecting the preset music menu The audio emphasis menu lets you select the sound characteristics according to the sound you are listening to.
Timer Falling asleep to music Waking up to music — Daily Timer — Sleep Timer You can set the system to turn off after a certain time, so that you can fall asleep to music. Press SLEEP on the remote. Each time you press the button, the minute display (the turn-off time) changes cyclically as follows: AUTO* t 90min t 80min t … t 10min tOFF * The system automatically turns off after the current CD or tape finishes playing (up to 100 minutes).
Display 8 Press ENTER. The start time, the stop time, and the sound source appear in turn, then the original display returns. 9 Press ?/1 to turn off the system. To Do this Activate/check the setting Press CLOCK/TIMER SELECT on the remote, then press . or > on the remote until “DAILY” appears. Then, press ENTER. Start over from step 1. Cancel the timer Press CLOCK/TIMER SELECT on the remote then press . or > on the remote until “OFF” appears. Then, press ENTER.
Adjusting the brightness of the display back light Press DIMMER repeatedly while the system is on. You can adjust the back light brightness cyclically as follows: DIMMER 0 t DIMMER 1 t DIMMER 2 t DIMMER 3 Using the display Checking the remaining time (CD) Press DISPLAY during play.
Optional Components Hooking up optional components You can connect a digital or an analogue component to this system. Optional analogue component From the audio output jacks of an analogue component Optional digital component A MD IN jacks B CD DIGITAL OUT jack Use audio cords (not supplied) to connect an optional component (such as an MD player or VCR) to these jacks. You can then record or listen to analogue audio from that component through this system.
Listening to audio from a connected component 1 Connect the audio cords. See “Hooking up optional components” on page 23. 2 Press MD to switch the function to MD. Start playing the connected component. Recording on a connected digital component 1 Connect the digital cable. See “Hooking up optional components” on page 23. 2 Start recording. Refer to the operating instructions provided with the connected component. Recording audio from a connected component 1 Connect the audio cords.
Troubleshooting The timer does not function. Problems and remedies If you have any problem using this system, use the following checklist. First, check that the power cord is connected firmly and that the speakers are connected correctly and firmly. Should any problem persist, consult your nearest Sony dealer. General The display window and buttons keep on or flashing even the power is turned off.
Problems and remedies (continued) Optional components There is no sound. The sound skips. • Wipe the CD clean (see page 29). • Replace the CD. • Try moving the system to a place without vibration (e.g., on top of a stable stand). • Try moving the speakers away from the system, or placing them on separate stands. • When you listen to a track with bass sounds at high volume, the speaker vibration may cause the sound to skip. Play does not start from the first track.
If the system still does not operate properly after performing the above measures, reset the system as follows: 1 Unplug the power cord. 2 Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet. 3 Press ?/1 to turn on the system. 4 Press x, ?/1 and ENTER at the same time. 5 Unplug the power cord. 6 Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet, then press ?/1 to turn on the system. The system is reset to the factory settings.
Additional Information On heat build up Precautions On operating voltage Before operating the system, check that the operating voltage of your system is identical with the voltage of your local power supply. On safety • The unit is not disconnected from the AC power source (mains) as long as it is connected to the wall outlet, even if the unit itself has been turned off. • Unplug the system from the wall outlet if it is not to be used for an extended period of time.
Notes on CDs To save a tape permanently • Before playing, clean the CD with a cleaning cloth. Wipe the CD from the center out. • Do not use a CD with tape, seals, or paste on it as this may damage the player. • Do not use solvents. • Do not expose the CD to direct sunlight or heat sources. • Discs with non-standard shapes (e.g., heart, square, star) cannot be played on this system. Attempting to do so may damage the system. Do not use such discs.
