Getting started The instructions in this User guide, unless otherwise stated, are written on the basis that you access your phone's functions from the default Home screen. If you set Timescape™ or another application as your home screen, the instruction path may differ. Important information Please read the Important information leaflet before you use your cell phone.
To remove the memory card • Remove the battery cover and press the edge of the memory card to release and remove it. To insert the battery 1 2 Insert the battery with the label side up and the connectors facing each other. Attach the battery cover. Turning the phone on and off The first time you turn on the phone, the Welcome menu appears. 1 2 3 To turn on the phone Press and hold down the key on the top of the phone. Enter your SIM card PIN, if requested, and select OK.
Internet and messaging settings For most mobile phone networks and providers, settings for messaging and Internet will be preinstalled in your phone when you buy it. In some cases you will get the option to download settings the first time you turn on the phone with a SIM card inserted. It is also possible to automatically download or manually add and change Internet and network settings in your phone at any time. See Internet and messaging settings on page 25 for more information.

• • To charge the phone using the power adapter Connect the phone to a power outlet using the USB cable and the power adapter. To charge the phone using a computer Connect the phone to a USB port on a computer using the USB cable included in the phone kit. Maximizing battery performance You can use the following methods to improve your battery performance: • • • • • Decrease the brightness of the screen. Charge your phone often. The battery lasts longer if you charge it frequently.
Menu Open a list of options available in the current screen or application Home • • Go to the Home screen from any application or screen Open the recently used applications window Back • • Go back to the previous screen Close the onscreen keyboard, a dialog box, an options menu, or the Notifications panel Home screen The Home screen is the starting point of your phone. You can personalize the Home screen by adding widgets, or by changing the wallpaper and the applications in the corners.

Select the folder type you want to add. 1 2 To add items to a folder Touch and hold an application icon until it magnifies and the phone vibrates. Drag the application icon over to the folder. 1 2 3 To rename a folder Tap the folder to open it. Touch and hold the folder's title bar to open the Rename folder dialog box. Enter the Folder name and tap OK.

To open the Notification panel • Drag the status bar downwards. Share and view videos from all over the world YouTube Some applications are not supported by all networks and/or service providers in all areas. You can download new applications. They will also appear on the applications panes. Recently used applications window You can view and access recently used applications from this window. • To open the recently used applications window From any application, press and hold down . Notification LED The Notification LED is located at the top right corner.
Radio buttons marked unmarked Scrolling You can scroll up or down, and on some Webpages you can also scroll to the sides. Dragging or flicking will not activate anything on the screen. To scroll • Drag up or down to scroll. • Flick to scroll quickly. You can wait for the scrolling to come to a stop or you can stop it immediately by tapping the screen. Orientation When you turn the phone sideways, the screen orientation changes automatically between portrait and landscape view.
• To jump directly to an index letter From any list with index letters, tap the letter you want to select on the index. Screen lock The screen lock prevents unwanted actions on the touchscreen when you are not using your phone. When the phone is left idle for a set period of time, the screen locks automatically. You can change the direction of the screen lock path to get a better feel, depending on if you are left- or right-handed. • To lock the screen Press briefly.
Entering text Keyboard overview This is an overview of some of the icons on the keyboard. Activate uppercase letter input Activate lowercase letter input Delete characters Insert symbols Switch to numbers Insert a space Using the keyboard When you start a program or select a field that requires text or numbers, the keyboard appears. Mark the Stay awake checkbox. Phone language You can select a language to use in your phone.
Your phone supports a microSD™ memory card, which is used for media content. This type of card can also be used as a portable memory card with other compatible devices. Without a memory card you can't use the camera, nor can you play or download music files and video clips. Internet and messaging settings For most mobile phone networks and providers, settings for messaging and Internet will be preinstalled in your phone when you buy it. In some cases you will get to download the settings to your phone.
1 2 3 To activate data roaming From the Home screen, tap the applications bar. Tap Settings > Wireless controls > Mobile networks. Mark the Data roaming checkbox. Network settings Your phone automatically switches between networks depending on availability. Some service providers allow you to switch networks manually, for example, if you are travelling abroad and want to use a particular network. To save battery, you can limit your phone to only use GSM networks.
Calling Emergency calls Your phone supports international emergency numbers, for example, 112 or 911. You can normally use these numbers to make emergency calls in any country, with or without the SIM card inserted, if you are within range of a network. 1 2 To make an emergency call From the Home screen, tap Dialer. Enter the emergency number and tap Call. To delete a number, tap . You can make an emergency call without a SIM card inserted.
• To activate the screen during a call Press . Do not press , it will end your call. 2 To enter numbers during a call During a call, drag the icon (at the bottom of the screen) upwards. A keypad appears. Enter numbers. • To mute the ringtone for an incoming call When you receive the call, press the volume key. 1 Recent calls In the call log, you can view recently missed 1 2 1 2 1 2 3 4 To view missed calls When you have missed calls, downwards. • To reject a second call When you hear repeated beeps during a call, tap Busy. • To answer a second call and end the ongoing call When you hear repeated beeps during a call, tap End call & answer. • To answer a second call and put the ongoing call on hold When you hear repeated beeps during a call, tap Answer. 1 2 3 To make a second call During an ongoing call, press , then tap . Enter the number of the recipient and tap Call. If the recipient answers, the first call is put on hold.

Enter the number you want to forward the calls to and tap Enable. 1 2 3 4 To turn off call forwarding From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap Settings. Tap Call settings > GSM call settings > Call forwarding. Select an option. Tap Disable.
Contacts In Phonebook, you can enter all your information for your personal contacts, for example, phone numbers, e-mail addresses and Web service accounts. When you view a contact, you get quick access to all communication with that contact. • • To view your contacts From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap Phonebook. From the Home screen, tap Dialer > Contacts The first time you open Phonebook, a setup wizard starts.
1 2 3 4 To edit a contact From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap Phonebook. Tap the contact you want to edit. Tap Edit. Edit the desired information and tap Save. 4 To delete contacts From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap Phonebook. Press , then tap Delete contacts. Mark the contacts you want to delete, or tap Mark all if you want to delete all contacts. Tap Delete. 1 2 3 4 To call a contact From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap Phonebook.

Select a web service. A list of your contacts for that web service appears. Select the contact you want to link to the phone contact. Tap Save to confirm.
1 2 3 To import contacts from the SIM card From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap Phonebook. Press , then tap More > Import contacts > SIM card. To import one contact, tap the contact, then edit the contact information and tap Save. SMS and MMS Before using SMS and MMS You can send and receive text messages from your phone using SMS (Short Message Service). If your subscription includes MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service), you can also send and receive messages that contain media files, for example, pictures and videos. A single text message may contain up to 160 characters. Longer messages are concatenated and sent as multiple messages. You are charged for each of the messages sent.
1 2 3 4 To change the download settings for received multimedia messages From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap Messaging. Press , then tap Settings. If you want received multimedia messages to be downloaded automatically, mark the Auto-retrieve checkbox. If you also want received multimedia messages do be downloaded automatically when roaming, mark the Roaming auto-retrieve checkbox.
Email You can use your phone to send and receive emails through your regular email account. You can set up synchronization with a Microsoft® Exchange Server by using the Moxier™ Sync application in your phone. You can then use the Moxier™ Mail application in your phone with your Microsoft® Exchange Server email account. See www.moxier.com for more information.
1 2 3 4 5 To reply to an e-mail message From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap E-mail. If you have several accounts, select the account that received the relevant message. Tap the message you want to reply to. Tap Reply or Reply all. Enter text and tap Send. 5 To forward an e-mail message From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap E-mail. If you have several accounts, select the account that received the relevant message. Touch and hold the message, then tap Forward.
Sony Ericsson Timescape™ Sony Ericsson Timescape™ revolutionizes your social experience by collecting all your communications into one view. Every event - text, multimedia, and email messages, web service updates - appears as a tile in a chronological flow on the screen. You can see a snack size preview of an event before choosing to view the full content. With the infinite key, you can view all communications for a contact.
1 2 3 4 5 To delete a tile in Timescape™ Tap the tile. Drag the tile until appears at the bottom of the screen. Drag the tile to the icon and wait until the icon is activated. Release the tile. Tap OK.
A recently taken video A recently played song or album The infinite key in Timescape™ When you tap a tile, the infinite key appears in the upper right corner (except for a recently taken video). If the tile is connected to a phone contact, you can access related content by tapping the infinite key.
1 2 3 To view related photo album material for a recently taken photo From the Home screen, tap Timescape™. Tap a tile for a recently taken photo or video, then tap . You can filter the displayed photos by Same date, Same location, or by contact name. The phone will display other photos which are tagged with the same contact names, date, or location as related content. Related photos are displayed for a maximum of five contacts.
Using Timescape™ as your home screen You can use Timescape™ as your home screen. By pressing , you will then always return to Timescape™. Note that the Timescape™ home screen differs slightly from the Timescape™ start screen. Calendar You can manage your time schedule with the Google Calendar™ application in your phone. The first time you start the calendar, you need to sign in to your Google™ account, if you have not done so before. You can then synchronize the phone calendar with your Google Calendar™ manually on the web, or set the phone to synchronize automatically by activating background data usage. For more information, see To set up a Google™ account in your phone on page 8 and Google Sync™syncing service on page 46.
Synchronizing Synchronizing between your phone and computer is an easy and practical way to share the same contacts, messages, or calendar events on both devices. It is possible to synchronize your phone in several different ways, depending on your preferred service and the content you want to synchronize. It is possible to use Sony Ericsson Sync to synchronize contacts, and to use Google™ Sync to synchronize your Google Mail™, Google Calendar™, and Google™ contacts.

Wi-Fi™ Using Wi-Fi™ you can access the Internet wirelessly with your phone. Before using Wi-Fi™ To be able to browse the Internet using a Wi-Fi™ connection you need to search for and connect to an available Wi-Fi™ network and then open the Internet browser. The signal strength of the Wi-Fi™ network may differ depending on your phone's location. Moving closer to the Wi-Fi™ router might enhance the signal strength. 1 2 3 To turn on Wi-Fi™ From the Home screen, tap the applications bar.
Advanced Wi-Fi™ settings Before you add a Wi-Fi™ network manually, you need to turn on the Wi-Fi™ setting on your phone. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 To add a Wi-Fi™ network manually From the Home screen, tap the applications bar. Tap Settings > Wireless controls > Wi-Fi settings. Tap Add Wi-Fi network. Enter the Network SSID name of the Wi-Fi™ network you want to add. Web browser The Web browser in your phone is fully optimized and comes with advanced functionality such as wireless web and Google Search™. You must have a Wi-Fi™ or an active 2G/3G mobile data connection to access the Internet. Before using the Internet Your phone allows you to access the Internet using a Wi-Fi™ connection, or using a 2G/ 3G mobile data connection.

To open a new Webpage, tap New window. To close a browser window, tap on the browser window you want to close. To zoom in or out on a web page Drag your finger in any direction on the screen to activate the zoom controls on the web page.

Press and tap Bookmarks. The bookmarks screen opens. Tap Add bookmark. Tap Name to change the name of the bookmark and tap OK. To open a bookmark From the Browser screen, press and tap Bookmarks. Tap the bookmark you want to open.
Applications and content You can personalize and find new ways to use your phone by downloading additional applications and content. Use the PlayNow™ service, the Android™ Market application store or browse the web to find useful applications, games, dictionaries, RSS readers, or anything your imagination allows. Using Applications You can install applications in your phone from sources other than Android™ Market. You can view and adjust settings for your installed applications.

Social web applications Facebook™ Facebook for Android™ makes it easy to stay connected and share information with friends. You can share status updates from your home screen, check out your news feed, look at your friends’ walls, and view user info. Use your regular Facebook™ account to log in, or create a new account the first time you open the application. • To open Facebook™ From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap Facebook.
View your friends' profiles and search for new friends View your albums and photos 1 2 To open a menu in MySpace™ From the MySpace™ application, select one of the tabs. Press to open a menu for the selected tab. Google Talk™ You can use Google Talk™ instant messaging in your phone to chat with friends who also use this application. 1 2 To start Google Talk™ From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap Google Talk. If required, enter your login and password, and tap Sign in.
Connecting your phone to a computer By connecting your phone to a computer you can transfer and handle files such as pictures and music. You may not be allowed to exchange some copyright protected material. You can connect your phone to a computer with a USB cable or by using Bluetooth™ wireless technology. When connecting your phone to a computer with a USB cable you will be able to install and use the PC Companion application on your computer.
1 2 3 1 2 3 To install PC Companion Connect your phone to a computer using a USB cable. Phone: Tap Start in the PC Companion installation window. Computer: PC Companion automatically starts on your computer after a few seconds. Follow the on-screen instructions to install PC Companion. To use PC Companion Phone: Connect your phone to a computer using a USB cable. If you are asked to install PC Companion, and you have already done so, tap Cancel and mark the checkbox to stop asking to install PC Companion.
Bluetooth™ wireless technology The Bluetooth™ function creates a wireless connection to other Bluetooth™ devices, for example, handsfree devices. A range within 10 meters (33 feet), with no solid objects in between, is recommended. You must turn on the Bluetooth™ function to communicate with other devices. In the Bluetooth devices list, touch, and hold the Bluetooth™ device that you want to connect to your phone. Tap Connect. To disconnect a Bluetooth™ device From the Home screen, tap the applications bar. Tap Settings > Wireless controls > Bluetooth settings.
Sony Ericsson Mediascape With Sony Ericsson Mediascape you have one place for all your media content. You can browse media by the categories music, video, and photo. You can use Sony Ericsson Mediascape to browse local media content on your memory card such as music, audiobooks, podcasts, photos, and videos. You can also access online content, for example, by browsing and purchasing music from the PlayNow™ service, or by exploring related content on the YouTube™ service.
Stereo portable handsfree • To use a handsfree Connect a portable handsfree. Music stops when you receive a call and resumes when the call has ended. If a portable handsfree is not included with the phone, you may purchase it separately. If you are using regular headphones without a microphone, you have to remove the headphones from the headset connector to be able to answer the call.
Music in Sony Ericsson Mediascape You can browse and listen to your music, audio books, and podcasts using Sony Ericsson Mediascape. You can also purchase music from online services (if available) using Sony Ericsson Mediascape. Use the Media Go™ application to transfer content to and from the memory card in your phone. For more information, see Connecting your phone to a computer on page 56. 1 2 3 4 To browse audio content on your memory card From the Home screen, tap Mediascape.
If your country of residence does not support the PlayNow™ service, your operator may provide an alternative service, or services. If there is no alternative service, automatically generated playlists appear in the lower part of the music home screen in Sony Ericsson Mediascape. You can check with your network operator for alternative service, or services. For more information on PlayNow™, go to www.sonyericsson.com/support.

You can also get album art for a single track or album by selecting Get album art from the music player.

PlayNow™ service You can use the PlayNow™ service to download applications, games, and music. The PlayNow™ service offers both free and non-free downloads. You can download items from your phone, or from your computer. The PlayNow™ service is not available in all countries. Before using PlayNow™ Before you start using the PlayNow™ application, check that: • • You have a memory card in your device. You have a phone subscription that supports Wi-Fi™ or 2G/3G data transmission.
Payment options There are two ways to pay for applications and other content you purchase from the PlayNow™ service: • • Credit card - pay with your credit card. You need to be logged in to your PlayNow™ account to be able to pay with your credit card. If you pay by credit card, the price will be lower than if you pay using Premium SMS. All your personal data is securely transferred using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption. When your purchase has been validated, the download will start automatically.

Using the still camera 1 2 3 4 5 To take a photo by tapping the screen Activate the camera. If the still camera is not selected, tap . Tap the capturing settings key in the viewfinder. Tap . Tap a spot in the viewfinder where you want the focus to be. The photo is taken as soon as focus is set. Smile detection Smile detection allows you to capture a face just as it smiles. The camera detects up to five faces and selects one face for smile detection and auto focus. A yellow frame shows which face is selected. When the selected face smiles, the camera automatically takes a photo. 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 To set smile detection Activate the camera. Suitable for photos you want to view on widescreen displays Scenes Use Scenes to quickly set up the camera for common situations using preprogrammed scenes. The camera has determined a number of settings for you to fit the selected scene, ensuring the best possible photo Normal The camera automatically adjusts settings for a photo Portrait Use for portrait photos. Face detection is turned on.
The photo light is turned off. Sometimes photo quality can be better without a light, even if lighting conditions are poor. Taking a good photo without using the light requires a steady hand. You can use the self timer to avoid a blurred photo Self-timer With the self timer you can take a photo without holding the phone. Use it to take self portraits, or group photos where everyone can be in the photo.
Geotag Tag photos with details of where you took them On When geotagging is turned on, the approximate geographical location is added to photos when you take them. The geographical location is determined either by using wireless networks (mobile networks or WiFi) or GPS technology. You can select both options simultaneously. To use geotagging you must also enable location features in Settings. See Location services on page 88.

Night mode When turned on, light sensitivity is increased. Use in poorly lit environments. Videos of fast-moving objects may get blurred. Hold your hand steady, or use a support. Turn off night mode when lighting conditions are good, to improve the video quality Beach and snow Use in bright environments to avoid underexposed videos Sports Use for videos of fast-moving objects. Short exposure time minimizes motion blurring Party Use for indoor videos in poorly lit environments.
Adjust the color balance for bright lighting such as under light bulbs, or when lighting conditions change quickly Fluorescent Adjust the color balance for fluorescent lighting Daylight Adjust the color balance for bright outdoor use Cloudy Adjust the color balance for a cloudy sky Image stabilizer When recording a video, it can be difficult to hold the phone steady.
Updating your phone You can update your phone to the most recent software for optimal performance and to get the latest enhancements. Updates can be downloaded wirelessly directly from your phone via the Internet by using a 2G/3G mobile data connection, or by using a Wi-Fi™ network connection. By connecting your phone to a computer with a USB cable, you can also download updates from the PC Companion application.
Location services There are two ways to find your location, using Mobile networks or GPS technology. Mobile networks technology determines your position fast but accuracy may vary. If you use GPS technology it may take a little longer, but it will find your exact position. You can enable both Mobile networks and GPS to benefit from both technologies when trying to find your position. GPS Your phone has a GPS receiver that uses satellite signals to calculate your location.
location is shown using information from nearby mobile towers. Your location is updated with a more precise position when the GPS receiver finds your location. Make sure you enable the location settings before trying to get your position. Locking and protecting your phone IMEI number Keep a copy of your IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number in case your phone is stolen. To view your IMEI number • You can find the IMEI number under the battery. SIM card protection This lock only protects your subscription. Your phone will work with a new SIM card. If the lock is on, you have to enter a PIN (Personal Identity Number).
Screen unlock pattern You can secure data in your phone by using a screen unlock pattern every time your phone is turned on or every time it is activated from sleep mode. It is important that you remember your screen unlock pattern. If you forget it, you have to take the phone to your local Sony Ericsson retailer. 1 2 3 To create a screen unlock pattern From the Home screen, press . Troubleshooting Common questions My phone isn't working as expected If you experience problems with your phone, check these tips before you try anything else: • • • • Restart your phone. Remove and reinsert the battery and SIM card. Then restart your phone. Update your phone. Regardless if you have the latest software, running Update Service can improve the software stability and solve problems. Updating your phone will also make sure you get an optimal performance and the latest enhancements.
Error messages No network coverage • • • Your phone is in airplane mode. See To turn on Airplane mode on page 24 for more information. Your phone is not receiving any network signal, or the received signal is too weak. Contact your network operator and make sure that the network has coverage where you are. The SIM card is not working properly. Insert your SIM card in another phone. If this works, it is probably your phone that is causing the problem.
