234 Chapter 16, Copy Protection and Premastering
Copy Protection
If a DVD-Video disc contains copyrighted material, you can use copy protection to protect
the intellectual property rights of the material’s owner, as well as the rights of the disc’s
publisher. Copy protection for scenarios is configured in the CMI Settings dialog and
enabled in the Layout Editor when writing the DVD-Video files.

Protection Schemes
The copy protection schemes available in Scenarist include APS, CGMS, and CSS. You can
use any combination of the three to protect some or all of the material on the disc.
APS
Macrovision’s Analog Protection System (APS) prevents copying to analog videotapes. By
using Automatic Gain Control (AGC), APS confuses the video recorder by sending it a video
signal that is stronger than it actually is, thereby creating a copy with very low levels and
degraded quality. In addition to AGC, APS can also impose two- or four-line color stripes on
the recorded video signal. To use APS, the CGMS option must be set to No Copying.
Note: To use Macrovision’s APS, you must obtain the licensing rights for this technology.
