220 Chapter 14, Navigation Parameters
Uses for General Parameters
You could set a GPRM that returns playback to a submenu, instead of the root menu, when
the viewer presses the Menu button on the remote control. You would do this if you wanted
the viewer, who likely would want repeated access to the submenu, not to have to access it
always through the root menu.
You could also set a GPRM to time out a video, where a counter that would keep track of
the number of times a looping menu has played and, when it reaches the preset value, send
playback somewhere else.
Other uses for GPRMs include:
Scoring tests that a viewer takes after viewing training videos, then permitting the
viewer to advance to the next level only if their score is high enough.
Timing an event, such as the length of time a viewer takes to respond to a set of multiple
choice questions, recording or even limiting the time, then forcing the viewer to a
specific path based on the results.
Keeping track of locations a viewer has visited on a DVD, such as videos and menus, and
then navigating the viewer to additional related areas of interest, to help the viewer
avoid long unnecessary navigations and make the DVD experience more effective and
productive.
Creating hidden highlight buttons that appear only when the viewer makes certain
selections in a certain order.
Highlighting the button of the current language.
Modifying DVD player behavior.
Setting a parental level.
Controlling password access.
