Subpicture Color Mapping 147
Figure 3 illustrates how button colors, as defined in the Colors page in the Simulation
window, are mapped from their original colors to those for each of the three button states.
When a button is not selected, the normal Display Colors are used. When the viewer
navigates to and selects a button with the ARROW keys on the remote control, the Selection
Colors are used. When a selected button is activated, usually by pressing ENTER on the
remote control, the Action Colors are used.
Traditionally, the four colors used when preparing subpicture assets are red, blue, black, and
white:
Emphasis 1 (E1) Red (255, 0, 0)
Emphasis 2 (E2) Blue (0, 0, 255)
Pattern (P) Black (0, 0, 0)
Background (Bg) White (255, 255, 255)
While it is much easier to map from these colors, since they are the default Original Colors
in Scenarist, it is not required. The four Original Colors used in the subpicture can be any
colors, as long as you first identify them in Scenarist before mapping to the colors for the
three button states.
The Background color in a Subpicture layer is typically used for areas that will be
transparent, so the menu’s Background layer will be visible. The other three colors are used
to define areas of text and shapes that will display over the Background layer.

Identifying Subpicture Original Colors
Before subpicture colors can be mapped to the colors for the three button states, you must
identify the Original Colors in the subpicture overlay. This can be done manually or with the
Eyedropper tool.
