124 Chapter 9, Creating Menu Tracks
About Menus
Menus are comprised of the following three layers:
Background Visible background image displayed during playback, which can be either a
video file for motion menus or a 24-bit color file for still menus.
Subpicture Overlay 2-bit still image, containing shapes and text for buttons, displayed over
the background image. The subpicture can contain up to four colors (no aliasing), each of
which is mapped to a color and contrast level that will be displayed during playback.
Color and contrast mapping can be defined for three button states: Display (button is not
selected), Selection (button is selected), and Action (button is activated, usually by pressing
ENTER on the remote control).
Button Highlights Layer containing rectangular areas around items on the subpicture
overlay. Button highlights (up to 36) are drawn in the Simulation window and can be linked
to other menus and movie scenes.
