Chapter 3: Pre-Installation Activities
Antistatic Precautions
To prevent damage to NPM components from static electricity:
Do not handle circuit boards unless you are using the appropriate
antistatic protection, such as wrist straps, boot straps, boots, or a
conductive mat. Wrist straps must have snug but comfortable contact
with your skin, and they must be connected to a grounding point on the
NPM.
Handle circuit boards by the faceplate, handles, or edges. Do not touch
any integrated circuits, connections, pins, or soldered surfaces.
Wrist-Strap Grounding Point
Each NPM rack contains a wrist-strap grounding point in the bottom-left corner
of the power distribution panel (PDP). The grounding point is connected to the
frame ground and provides antistatic protection when technicians work with
circuit cards.
NOTE: The NPM must be grounded for the wrist-strap
grounding point to be effective.

WARNING: Components in the NPM are highly sensitive to electrostatic
discharges (ESD). Follow the procedures described below to prevent unseen
damage from occurring.
