1 Safety Information Please read and follow all safety warnings in this User Manual for safe and effective use of your mobile phone. 1.1 Leak of radio frequency energy This phone is a low-power and wireless transmitter and receiver. After power-on, it will receive and transmit radio signals intermittently. The network system will control the transmitting power of the phone. This device meets the standard of radio frequency energy in the country and is certified by both local and international authorities.
Always follow local rules and regulations regarding the use of your mobile phone. Please turn off in places where the use of it is prohibited to prevent interference or danger. This device meets the RF exposure guidelines, and must be either in the normal usage position against the ear or at least 2.5cm away from the body. If you need to carry the phone with a carry case or belt clip, make sure that it does not contain any metal and must be placed same distance away from your body. 1.
hospitals and nursing homes where there is equipment sensitive to external radio frequency signals. 1.5 Airplane safety rules Switch off your phone while inside or near an airplane. The use of handsets in such areas is restricted and may be illegal for it may affect the operation of the aircraft and disrupt wireless telephone network. 1.6 Pacemaker A minimum separation of 15.3 centimeters or 6 inches must be maintained between the mobile device and medical devices such as the pacemaker.
The phone may interfere with some hearing-aid devices. In case of interference, please ask your hearing-aid manufacturer for a solution. 1.8 Other medical equipment If you personally use medical devices, consult your manufacturer to check if it can resist radio frequency signals. For relevant information, you may also consult medical professionals. 1.9 Safe transportation first Follow traffic regulations. Do not use your mobile phone while driving to ensure safety.
Switch off your phone near flammable facilities or areas where explosions may occur. Follow rules and regulations in such places to avoid danger. 1.11 Batteries Avoid contact to the battery’s metal terminals for it may cause short-circuit or injury. 1.12 Electromagnetic radiation See page 76 of this document. 1.13 Other safety precautions Please read these additional guidelines for your safety: · This mobile phone is not water-resistant. Keep it dry.
· Do not store this device in areas with extremely hot or cold temperature. · Never put your phone near a fire or lighted cigarettes. · Do not press the keys with sharp or pointed objects. · Do not kick, drop or shake your handset. · Do not place the phone near computer discs, credit cards, travellers’ card or other magnetic objects. Otherwise, information stored in the disc or credit card may be affected.

Always switch off your phone near medical equipment to avoid interference. Always switch off your phone near a refuelling point, chemical factory or when doing explosive jobs, because the phone may affect the technical assembling operations. This handset can be used with a SIM card and storage cards.
Charge your phone within the specified voltage only. Charging it beyond the recommended voltage may cause damage to the handset. Do not short-circuit the batteries to avoid damage and fire; Do not store the battery in a high temperature area. Never throw the battery into a fire to prevent explosion. Refrain from using damaged or old charger and batteries; Surrender used batteries to the supplier or dispose them according to local environmental laws.
The phone may cause interference in electronic appliances such as TV, radio and personal computer. The phone must be switched off at any time in an airplane to avoid interference to electronic system that may cause aircraft accidents.
3 Overview of the phone 1. 3.1 Keys of the phone Keys Description Move upward; Short press to set to mute state when there is a call; Up direction key on the left Short press to turn up volume during a call; Short press to enter into the ringing volume adjustment window in standby mode; Short press to enter into the media volume adjustment interface in media related interface.

Short press to lock the screen and short press to light up the backlight in locking interface; In other interface, press Home key to return to Idle interface. Home key In Idle interface, press Home key to enter into contraction mode. Return key Return to the previous page or quit the operating module. 2. 3.2 Interfaces of the phone Interfaces Earphone jack Description On the top of the phone, used to connect the earphone.
Charger interface On the top of the phone, used to connect the charger and the data line TF card slot Under the battery, inside right of the phone. 4 Introduction to usage of the phone 4.1 Install and Remove the battery Mi501 is powered with a rechargeable lithium battery. Please use the original battery provided by the manufacturer and installs the battery properly before using the phone.
3. 4.1.1 Install the battery Follow the procedures below in installing the battery: 1. Remove the cover by lifting it. 2. Align the battery’s exposed copper contacts with the battery connectors inside the battery compartment, press the battery down until it locks into place. 3. Align and hook the back cover to the top of the battery slot and then press the back cover down until it locks into place. 4. 4.1.2 Remove the battery 1. Before removing the battery, ensure that the phone is turned off. 2.
5. 4.1.3 Power display The battery power icon is displayed on the top left corner of the screen. When the power is already weak, a signal will be shown to display the current power and remind you of recharging. When the power is too low to support the operation, the phone will automatically switch off. Please read through the following notes before recharging your battery. - Charge the battery for at least 4 hours when using it for the first time. - Batteries have life cycles.
Charging the battery: Make sure the battery is inserted before charging. 1. Plug in the connector at the bottom of your phone (USB interface) 2. Then plug the other end into an AC power socket. 3. The battery symbol will appear indicating the charging status of your phone. 4. When all the scroll bars are steady, the battery is fully charged. You can then disconnect the charger. 4.2 Installing and removing the SIM card Before you can fully use your handset, a SIM card must be installed first.
2. Ensure that the clipped corner of the SIM card is facing the correct direction and the metallic contacts are facing downwards. 3. Slide the SIM card into the card slot until it stops. 8. 4.2.2 Remove the SIM card Removing the SIM card is just the opposite of the installation procedure. 4.3 Inserting and removing the storage card This handset has a T-flash card slot with a maximum storage of 4GB. Lift the back cover up to remove it.
The procedure for removing the storage card is just opposite installation procedure. Note: Please use the storage card (T-Flash) produced by the recognized manufacturer. 4.3 Switch on and off 9. 4.3.1 Switch on Make sure the battery and SIM card is properly inserted before turning on your phone. When the phone is off, press the ON/OFF key to switch on. 4.3.2 Switch off In standby mode, a long press on the ON/OFF key will enter the options menu.
10. 4.3.3 Password lock You can increase the security of your phone by setting a screen unlock pattern. Once set, in order to unlock your screen, you’ll have to draw the correct unlock pattern. See “Location and security setup” for the details of password locks, password revision and other functions. 11. 4.3.4 PIN1 Your PIN1 (Personal Identification Number) password can protect your SIM card from unauthorized use. This password is supplied by your local network service provider.
13. 4.3.6 PUK To unlock locked SIM card, you must input PUK (PIN Unblocking Key). The PUK is generally supplied together with the SIM card. If it is not provided or lost, please consult your service supplier. 14. 4.3.7 PUK2 Some SIM cards are provided with PUK2 to unlock the PIN2 locked. This password is generally supplied together with the SIM card. If it is not provided or lost, please consult your service supplier. 5 Call functions 5.
Direct dialling: Click the Dial icon to enter the analog keyboard interface and dial the number; Make a call from call log: Click the Dial icon in standby interface to enter the analog keyboard interface, go into the call log from the tab, and select the number from the call log for dialling; Make a call from contact list: Go to the contact list from the main menu or dialling interface, and select the number to dial; Make a call from SIM card: In analog keyboard interface, click the number keys and then # s
Add to the contact list: Add the current number to the contact list.. After dialling, please click the Hang-up Key to end the call. 5.1.2 Make an international call In analog keyboard interface, press and hold 0 Key till “+” appears on the screen, and then input the related national code and the complete phone number. For example, to dial a number in France, press and hold 0 key (until the sign “+” appears), input 33 (French code) and then input the complete phone number. 16. 5.1.
18. 5.1.5 Answer a video call Slide the Answer Key to the right to answer a call. After dialling, press the Hang-up Key to end the call. 5.2 During a voice call During a voice call, press the shortcut button on the screen to complete the following functions: Mute: Mute the volume so the person you are talking to will not hear you. However, you will still be able to listen to the other line.
19. 5.2.1 Adjust the volume During a call, press the Upper cursor Key or Lower cursor Key on the side to turn up or down the volume of the receiver. 20. 5.2.2 New information The prompt for new information may appear in the state column during a call. 21. 5.2.3 Answer a new call If the call waiting function is enabled and there is a new call during a call in progress, a notification will show up on your screen.
Hang up: End the current call; Mute: Volume will be on silent mode; Dialling keyboard: Enter the dialling keyboard interface; Hands free: After switching to hands free mode, the current calling voice is played on the loudspeaker; Merge calls: With this function, it is possible to make a conference call with several persons and make a separate call with a designated participant; Bluetooth: Switching to Bluetooth earphone is allowed after it has been connected. 23. 5.2.

Hang-up: End a call. 5.3 Emergency call You can make emergency calls as long as your current location is covered by the network area. Emergency numbers vary by country and those number(s) in your mobile phone may not work in all locations. Sometimes an emergency call cannot be made due to network problems. 5.
Far-near exchange: The locations of far and near pictures will be exchanged. Bluetooth: Switching to Bluetooth earphone during a call is allowed after it has been connected. Hang-up: End a call. 6 Contacts You can manage the contact information on your phone and the SIM card from the contact list. You can also make other operations such as dialling, sending a message and sharing a contact.
Delete: Delete one or several contacts; Import/Export: Share the contacts with the email or Bluetooth, or duplicate the contacts to the phone or the SIM card, or import and export the contacts from an SD card. Manage groups: Add a new group; Display tab: You can display the contacts with phone numbers only. 6.
Email: Add several email addresses; Instant message: Add several different instant messages; Postal address: Add several postal addresses; Organization: Add several organizations; Remarks: Add one remark or several remarks for a contact; Nickname: Add one nickname or several nicknames for a contact; Website: Add one website or several websites for a contact. 6.
7 Text messages and multimedia Messages You can send a short message (SMS) and a multimedia message (MMS) to other terminals in the message option. 7.1 Create and send a short message (SMS) In the message interface, click new message (create a new message) and input the number in the receiver. While you input, the matching contact may be automatically displayed under the receiver. Continue input or select the contact displayed or click the contact list icon on the right to select the corresponding one.

7.5 Message setup: Storage setup: Set the number of short messages (SMS) and multimedia messages (MMS) to be stored. Once it reaches storage capacity, old messages will be automatically deleted. Short message (SMS) setup: Choose from the following options: Set the short message sending report, edit the short message center phone number and manage the short messages in the SIM card.
8.1 Wireless & networks The phone shall be set according to your network service provider, including: 24. 8.1.1 Airplane mode In airplane mode, the phone’s wireless connections will temporarily stop. 25. 8.1.2 WLAN and Settings This option lets you open WLAN, set and manage wireless access points. 26. 8.1.3 Bluetooth and settings Activate Bluetooth and manage connection with other devices. 27. 8.1.4 Virtual private network settings Add the virtual private network. 28. 8.1.
8.2 Call settings Call settings include: fixed dialling, video call, voice mail and other call settings. 29. 8.2.1 Fixed dialling Fixed dialling enables user to dial several phone numbers. The number without a fixed dialling setting cannot be dialled. Enter fixed dialling, enable the function, input PIN2 (provided by the operator) to enable the fixed dialling function. (If activated, select disable to stop fixed dialling function.
31. 8.2.3 Voice mail Set voice mail number. Caution: You need to apply to your service provider for the voice mail service to be enabled. For more information, please contact your local service provider. 32. 8.2.4 Other call settings Call forwarding This allows you to divert a call in your phone to another number designated by the user.
Caution: You are required to input the correct phone number when activating the call forwarding option. Doing so will properly divert the incoming call to the designated number. Call barring Outgoing call barring: Select to bar all calls. You may also select to bar international calls and allow domestic calls only. Incoming call barring: Select to bar all calls or roaming calls. Barring password change: Change Enable/Disable call baring password.
Ringer mode is a group of preset specific definitions for the convenience of rapid start-up. The phone provides a group of default modes, including: normal mode, outdoor mode, vibration mode, quiet mode and airplane mode. Each mode is provided with a set of default values. The user can modify and save them in the mode as desired (excluding quiet mode and airplane mode). 33. 8.3.1 Start ringer mode After selecting the operating mode, the phone will be set in strict accordance with the mode selected. 34.
Vibration for incoming calls: Set to vibrate when a call comes. Notice tone: Set the default tone for notices. Flashing notice indicator: A tracking indicator will flash when you receive a new notice. Key beep: Set to play key sound when using dialling keyboard. Select beep: Set to play sound when selecting options on the screen. Touch response: Set to vibrate when pressing the soft key and performing some UI interactions. SD card notice: Set to use the sound effect when playing the SD card.
8.4 Location and security 35. 8.4.1 My location Use wireless network: View the location in the Applications via a wireless network. Use GPS satellite: When positioning, the accuracy is set to street level. 36. 8.4.2 Screen unlock picture To protect your privacy, you can enable a screen unlock picture. In order to unlock your phone, you need to draw the screen unlock picture. The photo can be changed or deleted. 37. 8.4.
Change the PIN of the SIM card: Change the PIN code of your SIM card. 38. 8.4.4 Password Password visible: Choose this option to make the text visible when typing your password. 39. 8.4.5 Credential storage Use security credential: Allow the Applications to visit the security credentials and other credentials. Install from the SD card: Install the encrypted certificate. Password setup: Set or change credential storage password.
Unknown source: Choose whether to install applications downloaded from a non-electronic market or not. Manage Applications: Manage and delete the applications installed; Running service: View and delete the applications installed; Development: Set the development options of the applications. 8.6 Account & Sync 40. 8.6.
Recover to factory settings: Clear all data in the phone. 8.8 SD Card and Memory of the Phone 42. 8.8.1 SD Card Check the total capacity and available space of the SD card, or uninstall and format the SD card. 43. 8.8.2 Memory of the phone Check the available space in the memory. 8.9 Search 44. 8.9.1 Web page search Display Google recommendations when setting search input. 45. 8.9.2 Rapid search box Search the contents found in the phone.
8.10 Language & keyboard 46. 8.10.1 Language selection Choose from English, Chinese (Traditional) or Chinese (Simplified) as the language system. 47. 8.10.2 Text settings Choose to set from the following text input settings: Sougou input mode, Android keyboard, Google input mode, Jinglianyun input mode (handwriting recognition based Google input) and User dictionary. 8.
Select network time and automatically or manually set date and time. This menu also lets you allow a 24-hour format display. 8.12 About the phone This option includes phone status (phone number, state, etc.), power consumption condition, legal information, model, firmware version, baseband version, kernel version and version number. 9 Browser Internet connectivity is made possible by 3G, GPRS or WLAN access. 9.
Type the website address in the input box. The matching website may be displayed below the input box during inputting. At this time, you may select the website below and click to open or enter the page from the URL of the text files. 9.3 Basic functions of the browser 9.3.1 Create a new window 48. Privacy setup: Clear the buffer, viewing records, cookies received and all cookie data, remember and clear form data, start location information function and cancel location information visit authority. Security setup: Record and clear the password, and display safety notes. Advanced setup: Default setup for website and reset. 10 Applications 10.1 Photo camera and video camera This phone is equipped with a camera that lets you take photos and videos and share it with others through the Share function.
54. 10.1.1 Photo camera To enter into the viewfinder interface, click the Camera key in the main menu or simply press and hold the camera key. Press Shoot key to take a photo, and click the thumbnail on the top right to preview the taken photo. In the preview interface, slide the left bar or press menu key to enter the camera setup interface, specifically: Viewfinder types: Select from Auto type or night scene type.
10.1.2 Video camera To enter into the video camera viewfinder interface, click on the video camera key in the main menu or press and hold the camera key to switch to the video camera. Press the Shoot key to take a short film. To preview the film, click the thumbnail on the top right.
10.2 Image library In the image library, you can select photos and videos to delete or share. You can share your photos through Email, Bluetooth or Messages. The image library also has Camera Settings function, specifically: Normal setup: Set the display size, storage order of the photos and videos, and display confirmation information before deleting a photo or video. Slides playing setup: Set playing interval, switching effect, whether to repeatedly play slides and whether to randomly play slides. 10.
55. 10.3.1 Music play In the Play interface, select to enter the Play List, Shuffle Play and Repeated Play. To enter the search option, long press on Artist, Album name or Song name. The related information can be searched locally or on Internet. For switching, you may select Previous, Pause or Next in the interface. In the Play interface, press the Menu key to go to the following options: Music Library, Party Shuffle Play, Add to Play List, Use as Tone and Delete. 10.
10.5 Voice recorder This handset has a voice recorder that you can turn on to record a call conversation or other ambient sounds. The recording files are saved in the format .amr. You can set a recording file as your tone. In the recorder window, click the Record key to begin recording. The recording time will be displayed on the screen. Click the Stop key to quit recording. A prompt on the top left will show the information recorded.
56. 10.6.1 Alarm settings Several alarms are available for this phone. You can set to turn them ON or OFF. Select an alarm to enter into the status display of the alarm, and view the specific settings of the alarm. Time: Enter time setting window to set the alarming time; Tone: Set the alarming tone; Vibration: Set to vibrate or not during alarm; Repeat: Select to alarm every day from Monday to Sunday or not; Label: Input a reminder that will appear during the alarming. 57. 10.6.

10.7 Calculator The calculator can perform four arithmetic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
