Connection
Protectiondevicesaremostofteninstalledfromeachdatalinetothelocalearthground,andshouldbe
selectedtobeginconductingcurrentatavoltageasclosetothesystem'snormalcommunicationlevelas
possible,butneverlower.ForRS485communicationlines,theselectedvoltageratingistypically6-8V.
Transientsuppressorsshouldbeinstalledascloseaspossibletotheportthatisbeingprotected,andthe
usermustprovideanextremelylowimpedanceconnectiontothelocalearthgroundoftheSolarEdge
device.Thisgroundconnectioniscrucialforpropersuppressiondeviceoperation.Theground
connectionshouldbemadeusingaheavygaugewireandkeptasshortaspossible.Ifthecablebetween
theSolarEdgedeviceandtheprotectiondevicemustbelongerthan1m/3.3ft.,acopperstrapora
braidedcableintendedforgroundingpurposesmustbeusedfortheprotectiondevicetobeeffective.In
additiontothehighfrequencynatureoftransients,extremelyhighcurrentmayflow.
Aprotectivedevicewithsurgedischargeratingsof In:10kA8/20μsandImax:20kA8/20μsis
recommended.
VariouslightningprotectiondevicesareavailableforRS485communicationlines.
