FIELD STRIPPING
REASSEMBLY
With the rear of the slide pointed in a safe direction and the
bottom of the slide turned up, replace the barrel in the slide
(Figure 21) while fitting it into the spherical barrel bushing.
This can be difficult as the fitting tolerances are particularly
tight between the barrel and the bushing (Figure 22 & 23). A
small amount of oil on the barrel can assist in this operation.
WARNING: Barrel to bushing alignment is critical.
You must use finger pressure only to align and
insert the barrel into the bushing. Patience and
practice is required since the clearance is precise
and minimal.
When the barrel is completely installed in the slide, its muzzle
will be flush with the end of the slide. With the barrel lug turned
up (away from the ejection port), insert the spring end of the
recoil spring guide assembly in the guide housing (Figure
25). Grasp the recoil spring guide bushing and pull it toward
you enough so the bushing can be securely engaged in the
small radial machine cut in the barrel lug. Be careful that it does
not become disengaged, fly out and cause injury. Make sure it
is properly centered in the cut as it will protrude from the slide
after assembly if it is not centered. Place a drop of oil on each
of 4 locations on the slide rails. (Figure 24).
Holding the slide and recoil spring guide firmly in one hand,
move the rear of the slide onto the frame rails. Continue
moving the slide onto the frame by depressing the ejector
lever down into its respective frame slot (See Figure 26).
Position the slide so that the slide stop notch on the slide is
aligned with the slide stop hole in the frame. Insert the slide
stop and allow the slide to return to the "in battery" position.
Decock the hammer. Reinsert the magazine.
