ABOUT THE ABOUT THE EZ SWITCH 10/100 The EZ Switch 10/100 SMC-EZ1024FDT and SMC-EZ1016FDT are 24/16-port Fast Ethernet switches. They have one slot on the rear panel for a fiber optic uplink module with one 100BASE-FX (SC, ST, MTRJ or VF-45) type port. The 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX ports deliver dedicated 10/100 Mbps links to each attached LAN segment. Each port on each switch supports automatic MDI/MDI-X detection.
EZ SWITCH 10/100 Features and Benefits ◆ Auto configuration for MDI/MDI-X cable connection allows connections to servers, workstations, hubs or switches to be made with straight-through cabling ◆ Optional multimode and single-mode fiber uplink modules ◆ Auto-negotiation of half or full duplex on all ports ◆ IEEE 802.3 and 802.
EZ SWITCH 10/100 Front Panel LEDs The front panel of the switch provides status LEDs for “at-a-glance” system monitoring. The following table details the functions of the various indicators: Port and System Status LEDs LED Condition Status Power On The switch is receiving power. RJ-45 Ports Link/ Act 100M FDX On The port has established a valid network connection. Flashing Traffic is passing through the port. Off The port has not established any network connection.
EZ SWITCH 10/100 Port and System Status LEDs LED Condition Status Module Ports Link/ Act On The module has established a valid network connection. Flashing Traffic is passing through the module. Off The module has not established any network connection. Note: All optional modules operate in full-duplex mode only. Rear Panel The AC power receptacle is located on the rear panel of the switch.
EZ SWITCH 10/100 Connecting to a Fiber Optic Port The fiber modules are shown in the figure below. When you connect fiber cable to a 100 Mbps module on the switch, be sure you use an SC, ST, MTRJ or VF-45 type connector, depending on the module. When inserting the cable, be sure the tab on the plug clicks into position to ensure that it is properly seated. For ST-type connections run cable from the Rx (Tx) port on the module to the Tx (Rx) port on the target device.
EZ SWITCH 10/100 The fiber module operates at 100 Mbps, full duplex, and supports 1EEE 802.3x flow control. The maximum length for 100BASE-FX fiber is as shown in the following table. 6 Fiber transceiver Optical Wavelength Maximum Cable Length Multimode 1300 nm 2 km (1.24 miles) Single-mode 1300 nm 20 km (12.
INSTALLING THE SWITCH INSTALLING THE SWITCH The EZ Switch 10/100 can be placed on a desktop or shelf, or installed in a standard 19-inch equipment rack.
INSTALLING THE SWITCH 8 Before rack mounting the switch, pay particular attention to the following factors: • Temperature: Since the temperature within a rack assembly may be higher than the ambient room temperature, check that the rack-environment temperature is within the specified operating temperature range. • Mechanical Loading: Do not place any equipment on top of a rack-mounted switch. • Circuit Overloading: Be sure that the supply circuit to the rack assembly is not overloaded.
INSTALLING THE SWITCH Instructions 1. Positioning the Switch: For desktop or shelf mounting, attach the four adhesive feet to the bottom of the switch. For rack-mounting, attach the mounting brackets on both sides of the switch with the screws provided, and install the switch in the rack.
INSTALLING THE SWITCH 2. Applying Power: Plug one end of the power cable into the power receptacle at the back of the switch, and the other end into an appropriate electrical outlet. Check the Power LED to be sure power is on. Note: It is not necessary to power off the switch before connecting or disconnecting any UTP cables, as these actions will not disrupt the operation of other devices attached to the switch. 3.
INSTALLING THE SWITCH Sample Applications In the figure below, the EZSwitch 10/100 is operating as a collapsed backbone for a small LAN. It is providing dedicated 20 Mbps full-duplex connections to workstations and 200 Mbps full-duplex connections to power users and servers.
TROUBLESHOOTING TROUBLESHOOTING 1. Symptom Power LED does not light after power on. Probable Causes Power outlet or power cord may be defective. Possible Solutions • Check for loose connections. • Check the power outlet by using it for another device. • Replace the power cord. 2. Symptom Link LED does not light after connection is made. Probable Causes Switch port, network card or cable may be defective. Possible Solutions • Check that the switch and attached device are both powered on.

CABLES RJ-45 Connector Pin Assignments Caution: DO NOT plug a phone jack connector into any RJ-45 port. Use only twisted-pair cables with RJ-45 connectors that conform with FCC standards. An Ethernet or Fast Ethernet twisted-pair link segment requires two pairs of wires. Each wire pair is identified by two different colors. Each wire pair must be attached to the RJ-45 connector in a specific orientation detailed below.
