SMART SOLUTION
PREVENT THE PROBLEM AT THE SOURCE
After installing our microwave solution on thousands of on-campus
microwave ovens, Ohio University saw a 92% drop in nuisance alarms!
OUR SOLUTION HELPED OHIO UNIVERSITY SOLVE A PROBLEM THAT WAS COSTING
ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS ANNUALLY!
The Problem
Nuisance alarms are a major and
expensive problem for many building
and facility owners, including colleges
and universities. Apart from wasting
thousands of dollars, nuisance alarms
can create potentially deadly behaviors.
When people hear a smoke detector
alarm too often, they may become
conditioned to ignore alarms altogether.
As one Ohio University student put it,
“When I hear the alarm go off, I tend to
shrug it off or sigh because it’s almost
never real.
The Cost
Ohio University’s Environmental Health
and Safety Department (EHS) partnered
with FEMA and the local Athens Fire
Department (AFD) to study the number
of on-campus nuisance alarms and
what was causing them. They found
the AFD was responding to about 250
on-campus alarms annually and burnt
food in microwave ovens was the leading
cause (22%). With each of these nuisance
runs costing more than $2,000, Ohio
University determined they were spending
about $100,000 annually because of
nuisance alarm activations from
microwave ovens.
The ROI
After installing our product solution
on all on-campus microwave ovens,
Ohio University saw a 92% drop in the
number of nuisance alarm activations!
The investment in these sensors has
reduced re runs, response hazards,
late night residence evacuations,
interruption in study time and the
cost of re equipment operation,
campus police and personnel required
to investigate.

Burning food in microwaves is a big
problem for us. We would mandate
such a product almost immediately
if it would stop the problem.
Director of Housing Ops and Fire Marshal
“ If you can stop 90% or more of the
false alarms caused by microwaves
count me in. I will recommend that
the university mandate them the day
I see one work.
Director of Fire Safety
If you can nd a product that would stop
students from burning popcorn and the
resulting re alarms we would be very
interested and probably make it mandatory
for any student who wanted a microwave in
their room.”
