2.4 Operating ra nge
2.4.1 Range
The SmartAnt SAA04-05224A range is dependent on the operating
environment. Every home o r office layout varies in obstacles, barrier s, or
wall types which may reflect or absorb radio signals. For example, t wo
802.11b devices in an op en space may achieve an oper ating distance of
up to 1000 meters, ( 3280 feet ) while the same devices may only achie ve
up to 300 ( 984 feet ) meters of range when used indoors.
The device automatically adjusts the d ata rate to maintain an op erational
wireless connection. A wireless device that is close to an AP may operate
at higher sp e ed s than a d evi ce far fr om the AP. Yo u can co nfigure the
dat a rates that a d evice uses. If you limit the range of data rates available
to the an AP, you may red uce the effective range of the wireless LAN
coverage.
2.4.2 Site survey
A site survey (util it y provided wi th the SmartA nt SAA04-05224A) analy zes
the installati on environment and p rovid es users with re commenda tions
for equipment and its placement. The optimum placement differ depending
on the d evice design and specificatio ns.
