Theechoesfromthebottomwillvarywithhowuneventhebottomis,whatkindof
bottomyouhaveunderyourvessel,(rock,mud,sandetc.)aswellasyourcurrenttilt
setting.Theechofromtheseasurfacewillvarywiththecurrentseastateandyour
currenttiltsetting.
Theillustrationdemonstrateshowthebottomandtheseasurfacereturnechoesbackto
yoursonartransducer.Insituation(A)youwillseeseveralweakechoesfromthewaves
andfromtherockonthebottom,youwillstillbeabletoidentifytheschoolofsh.In
situation(B)youwillbeabletoidentifytheupperschoolofsh,butthelowerschool
willbehiddenintheshadowoftherock.
Beawareofthatothervesselsclosetoyouwillalsogeneratereverberationduetothe
waterdisturbancecausedbythewake,thepropellersandthecoolingwaterspill.
Blocking
Themovementofyourvesselthroughthewaterwilloftenespeciallyinhigherseastates
causeairbubblestobegenerated,andthesebubbleswillmovealongthehull.Thisis
calledblocking.Inordertopreventthisnoisefromdisturbingyoursonaroperations,itis
importanttolowerthesonartransducerasfardownbelowthehullaspossible.
