Ifyouhavetoomuchgain,youwillseeasonarpicturewithtoomanyechoes.Thisis
becausethelargeamplicationpresentsallkindofnoiseandreverberationthatthe
sonarpicksup.Ifthegainissmallerthenoiseandreverberationwilldisappear,butifit
thegainistoosmalltheshechoesmaydisappearaswell.Inmostcasesyoushould
trywithamediumvalue.
Onthissonar,youcanadjustthehorizontalandverticalgainindependentofeachother.
Thehorizontalgainisusedwhenthesonaroperatesinahorizontalmode,forexample
BowuporTruemotion.Ifyouswitchtoamodewithaverticalview,forexampleTrue
motion/Vertical,yoursonarwillneedadifferentgainsettingforthebeamsdirected
towardsthebottom.

WhatisRCG?
RCGmeansReverberationControlledGain.Thisisatwo-dimensionallteringofthe
receivedechoesinordertosuppressunwantedsurfaceandbottomreverberation.
IfyouselectStrong,thebottomechoeswilldisappearaltogetherifthebottomisat,
whileschoolsofshclosetothebottomwillbeeasiertosee.
NotethatscatteredshmaybemoredifculttospotiftheRCGfunctionisactive,as
thesecanbemisinterpretedasreverberation.Itisthereforeimportantthatyouusethe
RCGwithgreatcareifyouraresearchingforscatteredsh.

WerecommendthattheRCGisactiveallthetime,butbecarefulinthevertical
presentation.TheReverberationControlledGain(RCG)worksbestonsmallschools.
Setting“1”isintendedforschools.Setting“2”ismadeforschoolswithhigherdensity.
Try“3”forschoolsclosetobottom,asthissettingwillalsoreducethebottomechoes.
Ifyouarelookingforscatteredsh,useRCGsetting“4”or“5”.
