1 MAN--MACHINE INTERFACE

1.1 General

The operating controls are located on an easily-operated control

panel. As some of the functions on a sonar system are in more

intensive use than others, these have their own control knobs

arranged in function groups, as tilt, train, etc. The other functions

are ”menu-oriented”, controlled by a single joystick.

The menu is displayed on the right-hand side of the display. In

order to make the best possible use of the sonar, the user must be

familiar with all the operating controls and functions. It is not

possible to identify settings that will provide the best results at all

times. This is because the sonar conditions will vary from place

to place as well as from time to time, and the variations may

sometimes be severe. Study the sections Modes of Operation

and Operation carefully, preferably while practising on the

sonar at the same time.
