Thisisachievedby
makingaccurate
measurementsofthe
distancesbetween
thecentreofthe
headropeabovethe
trawlopening(orthe
footropeatthebottom)
andeachofthetrawl
doorsorwingends.Ifthesedistancesarenotidenticalthetrawl(ordanishseine)willbe
skewedandunbalanced,andthisreducesthecatchefciency.
ThefollowingPIGeometryversionsexist:
•GeometryFine–Highresolutionicontodetectsmallerchanges
•GeometryCoarse–Lowresolutionicontodetectlargerchanges
•GeometryXT(Extended)Fine–Extendedrange,highresolutionicontodetectsmaller
changes

changes
•GeometryDF(Differential)Fine–differentialmeasurement(singlechannel),high
resolutionicontodetectsmallerchanges
•GeometryDF(Differential)Coarse–differentialmeasurement(singlechannel),low

TheDF(Differential)GeometrysensorsettingwillonlyuseonechannelonthePIsystem,
butwillnotprovidedextendedrange.
TheCoarseorFinesettingsarenotdenedbythesensorconguration,butinthePI
menusystem.
OnthePI44/54systemsthephrasesSensitiveandCoarseareused.
TheSimradPIGeometrysensorsystemhasbeendevelopedtobeusedonbothbottom
andpelagictrawls,aswellaspairtrawlsanddanishseiners.InadditiontothePI
Geometrysensor,thesystemusestwoPIMini-Rtransponders.Thesearemountedon
thetrawldoors(ortrawlwings).
