Whenthepeakpressureamplitudeissomewhatgreaterthan1atm,theabsolute
pressureforasoundsourceatsealevelwillbelessthanzeroduringtherarefaction
partofthecycle.InusingCWbelow10kHz,thisnegativepressure,ortension,is
thetriggerforasharplyincreasedlevelofharmonicdistortionandtheissuanceof
broadbandnoise.Anyattempttoincreasethesoundpressureamplitudeappreciably
beyondtheambientpressurewillcausenotonlytotaldistortionbutalsothe
generationofalargecloudofbubbleswhichwillactuallydecreasethefar-eld
acousticpressure.
Thedetailedbubbleactivitiesduringcavitationhavebeenstudiedinseveral
laboratories.Acousticianshaveidentiedgaseouscavitationresultinginstreamers
ofhissingbubblesthatjetawayfromregionsofhighacousticpressureswings,and
vaporouscavitation,whichradiatesshockwavesofbroadbandnoise.

Thepulsedurationcanbeadjustedaccordingtothecurrentdepthandwhatkindof
shyouarelookingfor.Thedeeperyouwishtosee,thelongerpulsedurationshould
beused.RememberthatinES70echosounder,thepulsedurationandthebandwidth
ismutuallydependant.
