andverticalrange(acrossechogram)aremanuallyselectedbytheStartDepthand
RangebuttonsontheMainmenu.
Thebiomassisautomaticallycalculatedbasedonchoicesyoumakeinthe
CalculationIntervaldialog;withinagiventimeframe,adenednumberofpings,or
aportionoftheechogramview.Thedataisthentakenfromanechoareastarting
immediatelyafterthetransmitpulse,andendingjustoverthedetecteddepth.
Ifyouhavelimitedyourverticalrange(usingtheRangeandStartRangesettings),
theresultingareaisusedforthebiomasscalculation.Iftheseabedisclearly
denedwithauniquebottomdetection,thebottomechowillnot
beincludedinthe
calculations.Therefore,ifyouswitchthebottomdetectoroff,thebottomechowill
beincludedinthecalculation.

ThisechogramisnearlyidenticaltotheSurfaceechogram.However,thebiomassis
calculatedinadifferentmanner.
Thebiomasscalculationsarenotrestrictedbythebottomdetection.Thismeansthat
thebottomechowillbeincludedincalculationsifitappearswithinthechosenrange.

Ifyouareinvestigatingalargeschoolofpelagicsh,settheStartRangeand
Rangetoenclosetheschool.Iftheschoolislargeenough,aSurfaceechogram
maymistakeitforbottom,andthebiomassreadingswillbewrong.The
Pelagicechogramwillhoweverdisregardthebottomdetection,andgivea
correctestimateofthebiomass.
