Thebiomassisautomaticallycalculatedbasedonchoicesyoumakeinthe
CalculationIntervaldialog;withinagiventimeframe,adenednumberofpings,or
aportionoftheechogramview.Thedataisthentakenfromanechoareastarting
immediatelyafterthetransmitpulse,andendingjustoverthedetecteddepth.If
youhavelimitedyourverticalrange(usingtheRangeandStartRangesettings),
theresultingareaisusedforthebiomasscalculation.Iftheseabedisclearly
denedwithauniquebottomdetection,thebottomechowilln
o t beincludedinthe
calculations.Therefore,ifyouswitchthebottomdetectoroff,thebottomechowill
beincludedinthecalculation.

Theechogramisrelatedtothedetectedbottom.Stopdepth(lowerechogram
boundary)andverticalrangearemanuallyselectedbytheStartDepthandRange
buttonsontheMainmenu.Theechogramisonlydrawnforpingshavinga
successfulbottomdetection.
ThebiomasscalculationismadeinthesamewayasforSurfaceechograms.

ThisechogramisnearlyidenticaltotheSurfaceechogram.However,thebiomassis
calculatedinadifferentmanner.
Thebiomasscalculationsarenotrestrictedbythebottomdetection.Thismeansthat
thebottomechowillbeincludedincalculationsifitappearswithinthechosenrange.

Ifyouareinvestigatingalargeschoolofpelagicsh,settheStartRange
andRangetoenclosetheschool.Iftheschoolislargeenough,aSurface
echogrammaymistakeitforbottom,andthebiomassreadingswill
bewrong.ThePelagicechogramwillhoweverdisregardthebottom
detection,andgiveacorrectestimateofthebiomass.
