The“pingrate”istheparameterthatcontrolshow

oftentheechosoundershalltransmitacousticenergy

(a“ping”)intothewater.

IfyouobserveapelagicechoontheES70,anditseems

tofollowthebottomcontour,itmayinfactbeafalse

echofromtheprevioustransmission(“ping”).Theonly

waytoremovethisfalseechoistoreducethepingrate.Ifyoudothis,alltheechoes

fromthepreviouspingwillhavedisappearedbeforeyoutransmitthenext.Onoldpaper

basedechosoundersthepenspentalongtimeontherearsideofthepapertray,andthat

reducedthepingrate.TheES70isal

o t faster,andyoumaysendoutapingevenbefore

theenergyfromthepreviouspinghasdisappeared.
