Thepelagicechogramappearsverysimilartothesurfaceechogram.However,the
biomasscalculationsarenotlimitedbythebottomdetection.

Inapelagicechogram,settheStartRangevalueto20meters.Thiswillmake
theechogramstartfrom20metersbelowtheseasurface(providedthatthe
transduceroffsethasbeendened).SetRangeto40meters.Theechogram
willnowshowtheareafrom20metersbelowtheseasurface,anddownto
60metersbelowthetransducer.Providedthatthedepthislargerthan60
meters,thebottomcontourisnotshown.
Thebiomasscalculationsarenotrestrictedbythebottomdetection.Thismeansthatthe
bottomechowillbeincludedincalculationsifitappearswithinthechosenrange.
Trawlechogram
Theechogramcoverstheverticalopeningofthetrawlwithreferencetothedepthof
theheadrope.
Inadditiontothetrawlopening,theechogramcoversacertainrangeoverandunderthe
trawlopening.ThisrangeissetbyadjustingtheRangeandStartRangeparameters.
Trawlsensorsystems(typicallySimradITIandPI)communicateheadropedepth,as
wellasthedistancefromtheheadropetothefootrope(trawlopening),totheES70at
regularintervals.Thisinformationisrequiredforthetrawlechogramtobegenerated.
Withoutthedepthoftheheadrope,theechogramwillappearlikeastandardpelagic
echogramcontrolledbytheRangeandStartRangeparameters.
Thedistancefromtheheadropetothefootrope(trawlopening)canbemanuallyset
intheTrawldialog.Thisisusefulfortrawlsensorsystemsnotmeasuringthetrawl
opening,orwhenthemeasureddistanceisunreliable.TheTrawldialogalsoallowsyou
toenterthedistancefromthevesseltothetrawlopening.Thedepthoftheheadrope
musthoweverbeprovidedbythecatchmonitoringsystem.
IntheTrawldialogyoucanalsodenethedistancefromthevesseltothetrawlopening.

Inatrawlechogram,settheStartRangevalueto–5meters.Thiswillmake
theechogramstartfrom5metersabovetheheadrope.Ifthetrawlopeningis
20meters,setRangeto30meters.Theechogramwillnowshowthearea
from5metersabovetheheadrope,downacrossthetrawlopening,anddown
to5metersbelowthefootrope.Onapelagictrawl,thebottomcontouris
normallynotshownwiththesesettings.Onabottomtrawl,thebottom
contourisshownoncethetrawlopeningislessthan5metersoverthebottom.
ThebiomasscalculationsinaTrawlechogramarenotrestrictedbythebottomdetection.
Thismeansthatthebottomechowillbeincludedinthecalculationsifitappearswithin
thechosenrange.
