Theechogramisrelatedtotheseasurface.Startdepth(upperechogram
boundary)andverticalrange(acrossechogram)aremanuallyselectedbythe
StartDepthandRangebuttonsontheMainmenu.
Thebiomassisautomaticallycalculatedbasedonchoicesyoumakeinthe
CalculationIntervaldialog;withinagiventimeframe,adenednumberof
pings,oraportionoftheechogramview.Thedataisthentakenfromanecho
areastartingimmediatelyafterthetransmitpulse,andendingjustoverthe
detecteddepth.Ifyouhavelimitedyourverticalrange(usingtheRangeand
StartRangesettings),theresultingareaisusedforthebiomasscalculation.If
theseabedisclearlydenedwithauniquebottomdetection,thebottomecho
willn
o t beincludedinthecalculations.Therefore,ifyouswitchthebottom
detectoroff,thebottomechowillbeincludedinthecalculation.

Theechogramisrelatedtothedetectedbottom.Stopdepth(lowerechogram
boundary)andverticalrangearemanuallyselectedbytheStartDepthand
RangebuttonsontheMainmenu.Theechogramisonlydrawnforpingshaving
asuccessfulbottomdetection.
ThebiomasscalculationismadeinthesamewayasforSurfaceechograms.

ThisechogramisnearlyidenticaltotheSurfaceechogram.However,the
biomassiscalculatedinadifferentmanner.
Thebiomasscalculationsarenotrestrictedbythebottomdetection.This
meansthatthebottomechowillbeincludedincalculationsifitappearswithin
thechosenrange.
Example1Biomasscalculation
Ifyouareinvestigatingalargeschoolofpelagicsh,setthe
StartRangeandRangetoenclosetheschool.Iftheschoolis
largeenough,aSurfaceechogrammaymistakeitforbottom,and
thebiomassreadingswillbewrong.ThePelagicechogramwill
howeverdisregardthebottomdetection,andgiveacorrectestimate
ofthebiomass.
