Radio Frequency Identification (RFID): A method of reading and saving data on a
transponder without contact and without visibility this transponder can be attached to
objects which can then be identified or located quickly and automatically due to the
data saved on it.
Restoration: In the closest sense of the word, re-establishing a former condition, see
also conservation.
Retentive paper / card: High-quality papers, card or cardboard which, during produc-
tion, had additives (mainly calcium carbonate) added in order to neutralise the acid
which is produced in the natural ageing process.
Room set-up: Anything unfixed that belongs to the set-up of a room (e.g. panelling,
furniture, wall hangings, curtains, carpets etc.)

Security area: Closed-off buildings and parts of buildings and marked-off rooms in
which the items can be found, which need to be protected
Security company: Company carrying out security tasks to protect people and mate-
rial assets
Slipcase: Protective case, open on one side, consisting of card in which a book can
be placed
Solvent: Colloquial for all organic solvents excluding water (e.g. acetone, ethanol)
Stackable container: Stackable containers made of plastic or metal. The measure-
ments are modular and a fraction of the European pallet norm.
Storage containers: Containers in which objects are stored in depots (e.g. box,
stackable bins)
Storage technology: Facility to store objects (shelving of all kinds, plan drawers, grid
walls etc.)

Thermohygrograph: Measuring device to record (-graph) temperature (thermo-) and
relative humidity (hygro) measuring devices that do not record are called thermo hy-
grometers
Tissue paper: Very thin paper which, in acid-free quality, is often used to wrap ob-
jects
Transponder: Readable marking of an object by a reading device (detector). The de-
tector is able to identify the individual objects (e.g. library lending)
