Kiwi packaging: Like pressure-sensitive kiwis in the food trade, the objects are
packed in such a way that they cannot move to the side but they are visible from the
top.

Liquid preparation: Animal preparations which are deposited in special liquids to be
stored (e.g. flammable!)

Mass deacidification: Various procedures to reduce the acid contents in industrially-
produced papers (amongst others of the 19

and early 20
th
century)
Micro climate: Climate restricted to a certain place which differs from the rest of the
climate in that room (e.g. for example in a display cabinet, in a damp corner, in unsuit-
able packaging)

Organic: Chemical compounds containing carbon, e.g. wood, plastics, hide etc.
Overheads: Costs occurring from operations (staffing costs, energy costs, cleaning,
interest on capital, system maintenance, building maintenance etc.), as opposed to in-
vestment costs.

Paint block: Area of the painting surface separating from the supporting material for
composite objects e.g. paintings
Parchment: Untanned, hairless skin of an animal which was used for certificates and
manuscripts
PAT (Photographic Activity Test): Test to determine how suitable materials are for ar-
chiving photographic material
Pheromones: Attractant (e.g. insects) given off by animals used synthesized in in-
sect-control
Powder surface coating: Process to apply colour onto metal without the use of or
only little use of solvents
Preventative conservation: Preventative measures to protect objects without inter-
fering with the object itself (e.g. climate, cleanliness, security etc.)
Protection for the reverse side: A protection at the rear of a painting which protects
the canvas from the back
