Formaldehyde: Chemical substances which are emitted by many materials e.g. wood
and resins. Their decomposition products can be damaging to the objects.
Fume and heat outlet: System of openings, channels, ventilators and valves as outlet
for smoke and heat in case of fire.
Fungicide: Chemical substance to fight fungal decay

Gas emission: Giving off gaseous substances by a material It is often used in con-
nection with the decay and ageing of wood, paint, plastics and adhesives.
Glassine paper: Usually shiny, slightly transparent, specially treated paper of acid-
free quality, often used to wrap paintings and graphic arts

HEPA – filter: High Efficiency Particulate Air Filter, air filter with high filter effect which
is also effective for fine dust, pollen, mould spores etc
Hygroscopic: Water-binding (as opposed to: hydrophobic, water-repellent)

Infestation: Unwanted appearance of organisms that cause damage to an object (e.g.
insects, mould or bacteria).
Inorganic: Chemical compound not containing carbon
Insecticide: Chemical substance to fight insects
Investment costs: Costs which are to be used for building or acquiring; as opposed
to overheads
IPM (Integrated Pest Management): Entirety of all measures to prevent, to recognize
and to deal with infestation This includes, amongst others, check, identification, treat-
ment of an infestation but also cleanliness and operational processes in an institution,
which are suitable to prevent introduction of pests.
ISO: International Standard Organization, international board of standards which
specifies important standards The ISO standards are partly identical with the EU stan-
dards (EN).
