Climate control, active: Retention of a room climate using technical systems (ventila-
tion, dehumidification, humidification)
Climate control, passive: Strategy to keep the climate in a room constant using
structural measures whilst using as little primary energy as possible (e.g. with solid
construction methods and good insulation)
Colorfast: Color (e.g. of a textile) that does not bleed or fade on contact with water
Conditioning: Treating the air with climate technology (warming, cooling, humidifying
or dehumidifying)
Conservation: Measures to keep and stabilize an object with the goal of slowing
down decay
Contamination: Contamination of objects, facilities etc by unwanted substances (e.g.
chemicals, preservatives, pesticides etc.)
Corrosion: Reaction of a material with its environment (e.g. rusting of iron under the
influence of moisture and oxygen)
Cross-ventilation: Getting a draught in a room (e.g. by opening several windows or
doors for a short time)
Cultural assets (intangible): A cultural asset that is not justified by its material exis-
tence but by its contents (e.g. literature, theatre, music, knowledge)
Cultural assets (material): In the broadest sense an object produced, used or
changed by man
D
Damp cleaning: Cleaning with little water as opposed to dry cleaning
Dangerous substances: Chemical or natural substances which are subject to the
regulations of hazardous materials and which require special precautionary measures
(e.g. poison or radio-active substances)
E
Embrittlement: A material becomes brittle under unfavorable environmental condi-
tions (e.g. light, dryness, chemical interaction, mechanical strain)
F
Fine dust face-mask: Dust mask which protects from fine dust. Type designation
FFP2 and FFP3, the latter also protects from smaller particles and mould spores
Fire (fighting) compartment: A section of a building enclosed by fire walls, fire resis-
tant ceilings or fire breaks that prevent fire spreading to an adjacent section or that
