4.4.5 Extinguishing solutions based on chemical agents

1230 Fire Protection Fluid, is
today the most appropriated chemical extinguishing solution known for room pro-
tection. The innovative Novec 1230 fluid is safe, effective and not subject to regula-
tory restrictions or phase-out
When protecting archives containing plastic or electronic media, Sinorix
TM
1230 of-
fers the best extinguishing results. Here there is generally a risk of smoldering fire,
and requires according to VdS a design concentration of 5,8% per volume.
Room protection based on Sinorix
TM
1230 systems, needs aprox. 20% of the cylin-
der storage space, required by an inert gas solution. Admissible load required on
floors is also reduced proportionally and overpressure openings needed are re-
duced by aprox. 70%, compared to a standard inert gas solution. All these aspects
are of key relevance when rooms historical buildings or underground have to be
protected.
Sinorix 1230 uses a 42 bar technology that allows high flexibility for the realization
of complex piping networks. The 42 bar technology contributes to fulfill the “10 bar
at the nozzle” criteria, which ensures full agent evaporation (10s after start of dis-
charge at the latest) and fast extinguishing before any severe damage to assets
can occur. Fast agent evaporation minimizes the formation of HF, keeping the con-
centration below the levels that can be critical for personnel and protected goods.

1230 Fluid has excellent environmental properties:
– Zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP=0)
– Global Warming Potential is the lowest of all chemical agents (GWP=1) there-
fore is not listed in the Kyoto Protocol or the F-Gas Regulation
– Atmospheric Life Time of only 5 days (ALT=5 days)
– Safety margin is the highest of all extinguishing agents in the market.
This makes Novec 1230 fluid an innovative, clean, and future-proof solution
Extinguishing concentration needed with Novec 1230 is between 5 and 6%, the
lowest of all currently allowed extinguishing agents, therefore over pressure pro-
voked when released are minimized and so are the required opening areas for re-
lief flaps compared to other chemical agent or inert gas systems.

Based on the traditional extinguishing agent HFC227ea, is still today a valid alter-
native for the protection of rooms, in countries where it is still allowed and where
due to competitive reasons other solutions are not preferred.
HFC 227ea has zero Ozone Depletion Potential and therefore no destructive effect
on the Ozone layer (ODP=0). Is still a valid solution, although in many countries is
questioned or not allowed due to its atmospheric lifetime and Global Warming Po-
tential (GWP=3500).
