Emergency evacuation –
Staff responsibilities
Be ready at all times
• Keep escape routes clear at all times
• Check emergency lighting regularly
• Carry out regular fire drills, which
• Reduce panic in a real incident
• Draw attention to any deficiencies
in emergency procedures
• Ensure that procedures for mobility or visually
impaired persons etc. are also practiced
The following risks must be minimized
• Corridors should not be used as cloakrooms
• Lockers (in corridors) should be fire-resistant
• Notice boards should be fitted with a cover
• Displays (of pupils’ work) should not
be allowed along escape routes
Other users of the school facilities must also be considered
(e.g. during evening and weekend activities). Such persons:
• May not be familiar with the building layout
• May have mobility or hearing difficulties, etc.
