3.SUBSTRATES:
Note:Allsubstratestoreceiveresilientflooringshallbedry,clean,smoothandstructurallysound.Theyshallbefreeofdust,solvent,paint,
wax,oil,grease,residualadhesive,adhesiveremovers,curing,sealing,hardening/partingcompounds,alkalinesalts,excessive
carbonation/laitance,mold,mildew,andotherforeignmaterialsthatmightpreventtheadhesivefro
mbonding.
WOODSUBSTRATES:
Woodsubfloorsmustbestructurallysoundandincompliancewithlocalbuildingcodes.
a. Double‐LayeredAPAratedplywoodsubfloorsshouldbeaminimum1"totalthickness,withatleast18"wellventilatedairspacebeneath.
b. Chipboard,OSB,particleboard,constructiongradeplywoodaregenerallynotacceptablesubstrates–addalaye
rofAPAunderlayment
gradeplywoodthatisdimensionallystable,non‐staining,withasmoothfullysandedface.

Underlayment panels
canonlycorrectminor
deficiencies
inthesub‐floor
whileproviding
asmooth,sound
surface
on
whichto
adhere
the
resilient
flooring.Woodsubfloorsshouldbeflat–3/16”in10’or1/8”in6’.
d. Insulateandprotectcrawlspaceswithavaporbarriercoveringtheground.
e. DONOTinstalloversleeperconstructionsubfloorsorwoodsubfloorsapplieddirectlyoverconcrete.

i. SHAWresilientflooringisnotrecommendeddirectlyoverfire‐retardanttreatedplywoodorpreservativetreatedplywood.
j. Thematerialsusedtotreattheplywoodmaycauseproblemswithadhesivebonding.AnadditionallayerofAPArated1/4"thick
underlaymentsh
ouldbeinstalled.
k. Alwaysfollowtheunderlaymentmanufacturer’sinstallationinstructions.
STRIP–PLANKWOODFLOORING:
Duetoexpansion/contractionofindividualboardsduringseasonalchanges,SHAWrecommends1/4"orthickerAPAratedunderlaymentpanelsbe
installedoverthesetypesofsubfloors.
CONCRETE:
NeworexistingconcretesubfloorsmustmeettheguidelinesofthelatesteditionofACI302andASTMF710,“StandardPracticeforPreparing
ConcreteFloorstoReceiveResilientFlooring”.
a. Onorbelow‐gradeslabsmusthaveaneffectivevaporretarderdirectlyundertheslab.
b. Wetcuring7daysisthepref
erredmethodforcuringnewconcrete.
c. Curingcompounds(DONOTUSE).Ifpresenttheycaninterferewiththe bondoftheadhesivetotheconcrete.Seekassistancefroma
substratemanufacturerifcuringagentsaredetected.
d. Removecuringcompounds28daysafterplacement,soconcretecanbegindrying
.
e. Concretefloorsshallbeflatandsmoothwithin1/8"in6feetor3/16”in10feet.
f. F‐NumberSystem:OverallvaluesofFF36/FL20maybeappropriateforresilientfloorcoverings.

Expansionjointsinconcretearedesignedtoallowfortheexpansionandcontractionoftheconcrete.Resilientflooringproductsshouldneverbe
installedoverexpansionjoints.Expansionjointcoversdesignedforusewithresilientflooringsshouldbeused.Controljoints(sawcuts)maybe
patchedan
dcoveredwithresilientoncetheconcreteisthoroughlycured,dryandacclimated.
LIGHTWEIGHTCONCRETE
Allrecommendationsandguaranteesastothesuitabilityandperformanceoflightweightconcreteunderresilientflooringaretheresponsibilityof
thelightweightconcretemanufacturer.Theinstallerofthelightweightproductmayberequiredtobeauthorizedorcertifiedbythemanufacturer.
Correcton‐sitemixingratiosandproperlyfunctioningpumpingequipmentarecr
itical.Toensurepropermixture,slumptestingisrecommended.
a. Lightweightaggregateconcreteshavingdensitiesgreaterthan90lbs.percubicfootmaybeacceptableunderresilientflooring.
b. Concreteslabswithheavystaticand/ordynamicloadsshouldbedesignedwithhigherstrengthsanddensitiestosupportsuc
hloads.
c. Surfacemustbepermanentlydry,clean,andsmooth,freeofalldust,andstructurallysound.
d. PerformBondtestingtodeterminecompatibilityofadhesivetothesubstrate.Shaw9050primercanbeutilizedtopromoteadhesion.
