ast year, Onkyo DVD players weren’t just acclaimed for their sound and build quality. They were also
celebrated for picture quality that, in
Home Theater
Magazine’s words, was “spectacularly vivid and natural.”
This year we continue our tradition of audio and visual excellence, and raise the bar another notch with
our first DVD-Audio player. Its performance, like all of our players, is simply breathtaking. So before you invest
in just any DVD player, visit your Onkyo dealer and find out just how much there really is to see and hear.

DVD-Audio
is the new standard for high-fidelity sound.
It’s data-loss-free reproduction of 192 kHz/
24-bit 2-channel stereo or 96 kHz/24-bit
6-channel surround sound, gives you the
ability to recreate music with such detail
and clarity, it sounds as if every recording
is being played live in your home. DVD-
Audio’s incredible storage ability makes
it capable of storing 1,100
times more information per
second than a CD. Plus, with
a super-high frequency rate of 192,000
samples per second—4.3 times greater than
an audio CD—you also get 256 times the
resolution. This translates into a frequency
response that extends up to 96 kHz,
and an extraordinary dynamic range of up to
144 dB. In short—an audiophile dream
come true.

It’s
finally here! And once you see your favorite
DVDs shown in all their interlace-free
glory, you won
t believe your eyes. Most
DVDs are essentially “progressive”—
meaning they produce video in complete
frames. However, to be compatible with all
NTSC and PAL TVs the DVD signal must
be interlaced—a method where the picture
is split into two fields and then blurred
together to look like one. Progressive
scan retrieves the original progressive
signal, and on such compatible displays as
HDTV, digital TV and high-end projectors,
“paints” all the visible lines on the screen
in a single pass. The result? Spectacularly
clear color, no motion artifacts, and details
so sharp they seem as if they’re etched
into the screen.

YSTEM
If you like your audio, and
like it dished up right—you’ll appreciate
the Burr-Brown 96 kHz/24-bit DACs in
all of our DVD-Video players. Renowned
throughout the world for their incredible
detail and warmth, these DAC systems
provide the most faithful reproduction of
appropriately encoded software
that uses a 96-kHz sampling rate
(more than twice that of CD)
and a 24-bit “word length.”

UTPUTS
You’ll find
at least one coaxial and one optical digital
output on all of our players—to give you
simple, single-cable hookup to your receiver,
processor, or 6-channel amplifier equipped
with a Dolby Digital or DTS decoder.
In addition to passing Dolby
Digital, DTS, and PCM
signals, the digital output is
software-selectable, to give you maximum
convenience when switching
between DVD, Video CD and
CD playback.
SCART O
UTPUT
This multi-pinned
jack gives you simple high-quality, single-
cable A/V connection to TVs, projectors,
and monitors. To bring out the full potential
of all your DVDs, three extremely clean,
separate RGB (red, green,
and blue) signals can be
derived and sent along to a
TV’s picture tube, thereby
eliminating the usual PAL artifacts,
including dot crawl and moiré (wavelike or
watered appearance), for stunning color
fidelity and virtually no discernible video
noise.

LACKS
If you’re a
video aficionado, undoubtedly you want
your DVD player to produce the deepest
blacks possible. That’s why all of our DVD
players can pass PLUGE (Picture Line
Up Generation
Equipment) signals.
This means you can
use DVD test disks
to set optimum
black levels.
There’s also an
enhanced black-
level control that
lets you set the
reference black
threshold cutoff to Normal (7.5 IRE), or
Enhanced (0 IRE), which expands the
overall contrast range in the pattern,
resulting in richer, deeper blacks and
finer tonal graduation.

ONSTRUCTION
Onkyo DVD players feature an anti-
resonant, heavy-gauge, reinforced-steel
chassis with ribbed side panels for greater
strength and to maximize vibration damping.
Large anti-resonant feet help keep shelf-
borne vibration from reaching the signal.
You also get a heavy-duty power cord for
optimum power-handling capability, and to
resist wear and tear over extended long-term
use. And the thick-metal
faceplate does more than
provide long-term
elegance—it enhances
overall chassis stability.
