Installing the spark plug
N Install the spark plug and connect
the spark plug boot (press it down
firmly) – reassembly all other parts
in the reverse sequence.
Removing the starter
N Remove screws (1)
N Lift the fan housing off of the
crankcase and pull it away to the
side
Removing the rope rotor
N Remove the spring clip (1)
N Carefully remove the rope rotor
with washer (2) and pawl (3)
Replacing a torn starter rope
N Pry the cap out of the starter grip
N Remove remaining rope from the
rotor and starter grip
N Thread the new starter rope through
the starter handle and secure it by
making a simple overhand knot
N Pull the knot into the starter grip
N Refit the cap in the grip
Warning!
To reduce the risk of fire and burn injury,
use only spark plugs authorized by
STIHL. Always press spark plug boot (1)
snugly onto spark plug terminal (2) of
the proper size. (Note: If terminal has
detachable SAE adapter nut, it must be
attached.) A loose connection between
spark plug boot and ignition wire con-
nector in the boot may create arcing that
could ignite combustible fumes and
cause a fire.
Replacing the Starter Rope
and Rewind Spring
The rewind spring can jump out –
risk of injury!
