Microsoft XPS
The MX-M503N/U, MX-M453N/U, MX-M363N/U, and MX-M283N are compatible with the latest formats, including
Microsoft XPS.
What is XPS?
XPS (XML Paper Specification) is a new file format from Microsoft intended for published documents, where once
published, the document cannot be changed. It is similar in function to Adobe PDF.
XPS is important because compatibility is built into Vista, the latest version of Windows, (separate downloads are
available for previous versions) therefore it will be usable for a lot of people in the near future.
Benefits over PDF file format
All fonts are embedded in the document
Colour handling has been improved, with support for systems such as ICC profiling
Support for a wider gamut of colours
Compatibility with Microsoft’s DRM software (RMS / Rights Management Software), which in turn is
supported by Microsoft SharePoint.
Printing XPS files
It is possible to print XPS files using PCL drivers, but it is not ideal. When printing via PCL, the data is effectively
converted into a Bitmap, which affects gradation and transparency settings within the data.
