It’s no wonder that Sharp continually sharpens its pencil to create new ideas for its product lines.
Perhaps as a precursor of future innovations, in 1915, Sharps founder invented the Sharp pencil, a
mechanical pencil from which the Sharp Corporation derived its name. Sharp lives up to that name with
its imaginative, ever-evolving technological creations. Among the many other firsts in Sharp’s growing
list: In 1931, as radio was gaining popularity around the world, Sharp had already begun research into
television, releasing the first Japanese television in 1953. Sharps exclusive bright colors and high-quality
images hit the screen in 1987 in the first 3-inch colour LCD television. Just four years later, Sharp
released the world’s first wall-hanging TV, beginning the era of large-screen LCD televisions. This led to
its 20-inch LCD television—the industry’s largest—in 1999. Sharp ushered in 2001 in a big way with its
introduction of the AQUOS brand of LCD TVs on New Year’s Day, and in 2007, Sharp introduced the
world’s largest LCD TV, at 108-inches. Each subsequent year brings exciting new advancements and
