Ask them to break the song down into measures, beats, and lyrics. Each measure
should be numbered in order, and contain a dot for each beat. The placement of the lyrics
should correspond with the proper measure, and beat.
Ask them to take a watch with a second hand, and write down a running time
breakdown of where each musical segment occurs, and to write down the information at
the appropriate measures on the Beat Sheet. Here's an example:
0:00 Introduction
0:05 1st Verse
0:25 1st Chorus
0:40 2nd Verse
1:00 2nd Chorus
1:23 Lead Guitar Solo
1:45 3rd Verse
2:01 3rd Chorus
2:27 Chorus Repeat
2:51 Begin Audio Fade Out
3:03 Out
When you receive the completed sheets, SAVE THEM! Make copies to write on.
When working on the Beat Sheet, listen to parts of the song over and over again, if
necessary. Use a pencil and eraser so that changes can be easily made.
