1. Inspect the shift shaft for damage. Use an em-
ery cloth to remove any small damage. If nec-
essary, replace the shift shaft. Figure 5.63.
2 Place the spring and the shift fork into posi-
tion in the differential. The spring must touch
the screw side of the differential. The boss on
theforkmustbetowardtheadjustingbolt.
3. Install the shift shaft so the smaller part of the
shaft goes through the fork and the spring.
4. If removed, install the O-ring onto the piston.
Apply axle lubricant to the O-ring.
5. Install the piston in the shift shaft.
WARNING
When you apply some silicone gasket materi-
als, a small amount of acid vapor is present.
To prevent serious personal injury, ensure
that the work area is well-ventilated. Read the
manufacturer’s instructions before using a sili-
cone gasket material, then carefully follow the
instructions. If a silicone gasket material gets
into your eyes, follow the manufacturer’s emer-
gency procedures. Have your eyes checked by
a physician as soon as possible.
6.Onange-typecylinders,applysiliconegas-
ket material onto the mounting surface of the
cylinder.
On threaded cylinders, apply a continuous
0.06-inch(1.5mm)diameterbeadofaange
sealant, Meritor part number 2297-D-7076,
around the cylinder thread circumference.
7.Installthecylinder.Onange-typecylinders,
install and tighten the capscrews 7-12 lb-ft
(10-16 N.m).
