Wireless LAN Communications
WhenawiredEthernetconnectionisnotdesired,awirelessLAN
adaptermaybeinstalledinthePCMCIAsocket.Thisrequiresthatthe
PCMCIAdaughter‐cardfeaturebeinstalled.AwirelessLANusedin
theterminalmustmeetthefollowingrequirements:
IntegratedantennathatmeetstherequirementsofPCMCIA(PC
Card)ExtendedType2carddefinition(amaximumof5‐cm
additionallength).
PowerconsumptionwithinthecapabilitiesofthePCMCIA
daughter‐card.
Signalingrequirementswithinthecapabilitiesoftheterminal
PCMCIAinterface.ThemainrestrictionisthatDMAtransactions
arenotsupportedoverthePCMCIAinterface.
Devicedriversforthetargetedoperatingsystemmustexist.
Appropriateinfrastructure(serversupport,BaseStations,Ceiling
Antennas,etc)mustbepresentintheinstallationsite,andthe
maximumRFrangeofthewirelesssystemmustnotbeexceeded.
Interoperability‐Whilethe802.11standardprovidesaninteroperable
protocoldefinition,thereare
vendor‐specificextensionstotheprotocol
thatencourageuserstostaywithonesupplierʹsequipment.Thisalso
appliestowirelessinfrastructureandaccesspoints,802.11doesnot
governthisoperation.MixingofRFsupplierson asiteisnot
recommendeduntiltheRFsuppliershavedemonstrated
interoperability.
Thewireless
networksoperateatspeedsof1‐2MB/swith2percent
packetlosstypical.Theapplicationdevelopermustbeawareofthe
performancelimitationsanddesignapplicationsthatareacceptableto
thecustomerwhenrunovertheslowernetwork.
RemoteWakeupoverthewirelessnetworkisnotpossiblebecausethe
cards
donotsupportit.Analternativeistousethesystemreal‐time
clockwakeupatascheduledtime.
