Thefilesystemdataredistributionutilityisdesignedtooperatewhenafile
systemisexpandedintonewstorageafterSDshavebeenaddedtoaStorage
Poolwhenthefilesystemisnearlyfull.However,storagemayalsobeadded
toaStoragePoolforotherreasons:
•Toincreaseperformance.
•To
preventthefilesystemfrombecoming100%full.
Toachievethedesiredresultsineitherofthesesituations,youcanusethe
followingprocessafteraddingthestorage(afteraddingtheSDstotheStorage
Pool):
1. Createadummyfilesystem,usingallavailablespace.
2. ExpandtheStoragePoolintothenew
SDs.
3. Expandthealmostfulltargetfilesystemtousesome(orall)ofthespace
addedtotheStoragePool.Notethattheexpansionshouldbeatleast50%
oftheaddedstoragecapacity.
4. Runthefilesystemdataredistributionutility.
5. Deletethedummyfilesystem.
SnapshotsandtheFileSystem
DataRedistributionUtility
Whenthefilesystemdataredistributionutil ityisrunandsnapshotsare
enabled,theolddataispreserved.Asaresult,snapshotswillgrow,
consumingalotofdiskspace.Thespaceusedbythesesnapshotsisnotfreed
untilallsnapshotspresentwhenthefilesystemdata
redistributionutilitywas
startedhavebeendeleted.
Therearefouroptionsavailabletorecoverthespaceusedbysnapshots:
1. Allowthesnapshotstobedeletedaccordingtothesnapshot
configuration.
Thisoptionrecoversspacetheslowest,butcouldbeusedinscenarios
wherethespacewon’tberequiredimmediatelyafterthefile
systemdata
redistributionutilitycompletes.
2. Manuallydeletesnapshotsafterrunningthefilesystemdata
redistributionutility.
Thisoptionrecoversspacemorequicklythanoption1.
3. Manuallykillsnapshotsafterrunningthefilesystemdataredistribution
utility.
Thisoptionalsorecoversspacemorequicklythanoptions1or2,butit
requiresthatthefile
systemistakenoffline.
4. Disablesnapshots(andthereforebackups)andkill/deleteexistent
snapshotsbeforerunningthefilesystemdataredistributionutility.
Thisoptionavoidsthesnapshotspaceusageproblemaltogether.
