2.10.13 Channelized OC-12 to DS-3 Physical Interface Card
The rapid growth of the Internet and Internet-related applications are driving
demand for a scalable high-speed access infrastructure. As the number of
subscribers outgrow N x DS-0 and DS-1 access circuits, there is an
increasing need to deliver a rich set of services over faster interfaces and to
ease provisioning of higher densities of high-speed circuits. As the number of
DS-3 circuits grows, the density of coax cables is becoming unwieldy and
space constraints in many POPs are making the pulling of additional copper
cable less feasible.
The Channelized OC-12 (ChOC-12) to DS-3 Physical Interface Card (PIC)
fulfills these requirements and eases the deployment of DS-3 circuits by
supporting up to 12 DS-3 channels on a single SONET OC-12 interface. This
channelized optical interface eliminates the need to pull heavy, space-
consuming coax cable when provisioning new DS-3 circuits. Rather, circuit
grooming is pushed to the edge of the access network, and the addition of a
DS-3 customer is implemented by turning up a logical DS-3 channel. The
result is a PIC that provides the density, performance, and feature set
needed to scale high-speed access connections rapidly, reliably, and
manageably.

2.10.14 Channelized DS-3 Physical Interface Card for M-series Routers
The Channelized DS-3 (ChDS-3) Physical Interface Card (PIC) for M-series
Internet backbone routers provides industry-leading high-density T1
connectivity for access aggregation. The ChDS-3 PIC supports up to four
physical ports, each port providing 28 channels for T1 or fractional-T1
connectivity. You can configure speeds ranging from DS-0 (64 Kbps) through
a full T1 (1.54 Mbps) in 64 Kbps increments. Additionally, the PIC leverages
the Internet Processor II™ ASIC capabilities to support very high-density T1
access concentration with edge services at full wire-rate performance.
Features
§ Wire-rate throughput on all ports at 1.54 Mbps, full duplex
§ Fine-granularity packet filtering per channel for enhanced network
security, without compromising performance
§ Per-channel rate limiting based on filter criteria to enable tiered services
with packet bursts
