2.10.8 Flexible PIC Concentrator Cards for Juniper Networks Routers
Flexible PIC Concentrators (FPCs) house the Physical Interface Cards
(PICs) and are installed in slots in the M20™, M40™, and M160™ Internet
backbone routers. These intelligent, high-performance interface
concentrators offer unparalleled interface density and flexibility.
There are three FPCs:
§ FPC for M20 and M40 routers
§ FPC1 for the M160 router
§ FPC2 for the M160 router
NOTE: The OC-48c/STM-16 SONET/SDH PIC for the M20 and M40 routers
does not require that you order an FPC. The OC-192c/STM-64 SONET/SDH
PIC for the M160 router does not require that you order an FPC1 or FPC2.
Features
§ 3.2-Gbps full-duplex aggregate throughput per M20 and M40 FPC
§ 12.8-Gbps full-duplex aggregate throughput per M160 FPC1 and FPC2
§ Wire-rate parsing, prioritizing, and queuing of packets
§ Single-stage buffering
§ Class of service support
§ Hot insertion and removal
2.10.8.1 FPCs for M20 and M40 Routers
Flexible PIC Concentrators (FPCs) on the M20™ and M40™ Internet
backbone routers house the Physical Interface Cards (PICs), delivering
industry-leading density and seamless integration into a wide range of
backbone environments. FPCs connect the PICs to the rest of the router so
that incoming packets are then forwarded across the midplane to the
appropriate destination port.
Features
§ High-density port concentration
§ 3.2-Gbps full-duplex aggregate throughput per FPC
§ I/O Manager ASIC for wire-rate parsing, prioritizing, and queuing of
packets
§ I/O Manager ASIC has 128-MB SDRAM, which is pooled with all FPCs
on the same switching plane to buffer packets
§ ASIC-based framing and forwarding
§ Single-stage buffering system
§ Layer 2/Layer 3 Framing
§ Class of service (CoS) support
§ Encapsulations
o Cisco High-level Data Link Control (HDLC)
o Frame Relay
o Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) Circuit Cross-connect
o Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)
§ 1-MB parity-protected SSRAM memory
§ Hot insertion and removal
When you install an FPC with PICs into an operating router, the Routing
Engine downloads the FPC software, the FPC runs its diagnostics, and the
PICs on the FPC slot are enabled.
I/O Manager ASIC
Each FPC contains an I/O Manager ASIC that supports wire-rate packet
parsing, packet prioritizing, and queuing. The I/O Manager ASIC divides the
