§ Reboot the router; either by power-cycling it or by issuing the request system
reboot command from the CLI.
§ When the router finishes booting, you are prompted for the terminal type:
§ These are the predefined terminal types available to sysinstall when running
stand-alone. Please choose the closest match for your particular terminal.
1 ...................... Standard ANSI terminal.
2 ...................... VT100 or compatible terminal.
3 ...................... FreeBSD system console (color).
4 ...................... FreeBSD system console (monochrome).
Your choice: (1-4)
§ The router then copies the software from the removable media onto your
system, occasionally displaying status messages. Copying the software can
take up to 10 minutes.
§ Remove the removable medium when prompted. The router then reboots
from the primary boot device on which the software was just installed. When
the reboot is complete, the router displays the login prompt.
5.4 System upgrade
Each JUNOS software release (jbundle) consists of the following components:
§ Kernel and network tools package, which contains the operating system
(jkernel)
§ Routing package, which contains the software that runs on the Routing
Engine (jroute)
§ Packet Forwarding Engine software package (jpfe)
A package is a collection of files that make up a software component. You can
either reinstall the jbundle or the individual packages separately. If you reinstall
the jroute, it will restart the routing daemon but it doesn’t require a reboot. If you
reinstall the jkernel/jbundle, it will require a reboot for that package to get
activated.
The three software packages are provided as a single unit, called a bundle
(jbundle), which you can use to upgrade all the packages at once. You can also
upgrade the three packages individually.
To upgrade all three software packages,
§ Download the software packages from the Support & Services page on the
Juniper Networks Web site.
§ Copy each software package to the router. You might want to copy them to
the /var/tmp directory, which is on the rotating media (hard disk) and is a
large file system.
user@host> copy file ftp://ftp/directory/package-name
/var/tmp
§ Delete the existing software packages and add the new ones:
user@host> request system software add /var/tmp/jbundle-
package-name
package-name is the full URL to the file.
§ Reboot the router to start the new software:
user@host> request system reboot
Similarly, you can delete and add individual packages.
When jroute gets installed, the routing daemon is restarted which will bring down
the routing protocol sessions. When jkernel/jbundle is installed, it will require a
reboot to get activated.
5.4.1 Routine maintenance procedures
There are no routine hardware maintenance procedures needed or suggested
per any of our service plans. There are suggested maintenance procedures
outlined in the Hardware documentation, but they are not required as part of a
service agreement. For software, as part of the support agreement, customers
