4.14.1 LOOSESOILCONDITIONS
If the soil is too loose before seeding, the final packed surface will be excessively below the
loose soil that is thrown to the sides. This increases the likelihood of soil falling, blowing or
washingbackintothepackertirepath.Theresultisanalteredseeddepth.Thesolutiontothis
isto ensurethatthe soilis nottooloosebeforeseeding.It may benecessary topackthesoil
beforeseeding.
THESEEDHAWKDRILLWILLCOVERADJACENTROWSIF:
Thesoilisconventionallytilledleavingitloose.
Strawand/orchaffispoorlyspread,wetorinlargeclumps.
Fieldtravelspeedisexcessive.Mayaffectabovelisteditems.
4.14.2 MUDDYSOILCONDITIONS
Seedingdepthmaybealteredifmudstickstothepackertire.Ifmudisonly0.25‐0.38in(6‐
10mm)thick,thenthisisnotusuallyaconcern.Assuminggoodsoilmoisture,thereducedseed
depthisstilladequate.Air‐inflatedpacker tiresshould bedeflatedslightlytoallowthetireto
bulgeslightlyandshedanymudbuildup.Ifthemudthicknessisuniform,theseeddepth,also,
willbeuniform,butshallowerthantheinitialdepthsetting.Itmaybedesirabletosettheseed
depthdeepertocompensateformudbuildup.
4.14.3 OPERATINGONCURVESANDCORNERS
Whenseedingaroundcurvesandcornersthepackerwheelmovesoutofthefurrowandrides
upon thehard,undisturbedfurrowshoulders.Packingforceis concentratedmoresoon the
shoulder and the packing on the seedbed is reduced.In addition to reduced packing action,
fertilizerplacementisalsoadverselyaffected.Optimumperformance,ofcourse,isseedingina
straightpathasmuchaspossible.Itisalsoimportanttoturnrighttokeepthefertilizeroutof
theseedrow.
4.14.4 LOWPACKERTIREPRESSURE
Forpackertiresthatareairinflated:ifthepackingforcesarehighandthetirepressureislow,
effectivepackingactionisreduced.Thetirewidensandridesharderonthefurrowshoulders.
Thiscanbecorrectedbyincreasingtirepressureand/orreducingdownwardpackingforce.SEE
