Quick Pin NOTE: Seed and fertilizer depth are always measured down from the packed surface of the furrow. The seed and fertilizer knives are mounted at a fixed distance apart on the opener arm assembly. The knives are also offset laterally to place seed and fertilizer in adjacent, yet separate, furrows. The packer/gauge wheel packs the soil around the complete disturbed areas of the furrows to ensure optimum seed/soil contact and fertilizer placement as well as maintaining available soil moisture.
4.0 OPERATION 4.1 FIELD OPERATION 4.1.1 Operator Responsibility It is the responsibility of the owner to ensure SAFE operation, adjustment, maintenance and repair of the Seed Hawk Drill. This responsibility includes the proper training of any person who will operate, adjust maintain, repair or work in the vicinity of the Seed Hawk Drill. This Operator’s Manual provides step-by-step procedures for proper operation, field adjustment, routine maintenance, and equipment repairs for the Seed Hawk® Drill.
4.2 TRACTOR HOOK UP Change the tractor’s hydraulic filter after the first day or two of Seed Hawk operation. Some debris may have collected in the hydraulic system during manufacturing. Changing the filter will remove this debris, and prevent is from damaging components on the seeder and tractor. Shank lift and lower (Two hoses with red bands) Connect the pair of 1/2” hydraulic lines to activate the shank lift and lower.
4.2.1 Hydraulic Manifold (Two hoses with green bands) Connect the other pair of 1/2” hydraulic lines to activate the wing lift and lower, and the standby supply to the shank and wing cylinders. The manifold supply line is marked with a narrow green band, and the return line is marked with a wide green band. You must also connect the dump lines (yellow bands) to return hydraulic fluid back to the tractor. One dump line is a 1/2” line from the (optional) fan case drain.
4.3 HYDRAULIC HOSE HOOK UP These red banded hoses are for your shank lift and lower. One hose has a ball valve to close for transport and opened while seeding. These green banded hoses are for your wing lift and lower. When the wings are on the ground, the lever in the cab is locked in the forward position while seeding. This pressurizes the hydraulic manifold in order to use the Seed Hawk Tool Bar successfully. This single yellow banded hose is the dump line that is needed for the hydraulic manifold.
4.4 HYDRAULIC MANIFOLD DESCRIPTION This is the pressure reducing, relieving valve, which is electrified when your packing switch is turned on. This valve maintains packing pressure on your openers during seeding. This is a 4” shank pressure gauge with a maximum 1500 Psi. Every new Seed Hawk is set at 900 Psi. Please refer to pages 29-31 which illustrates how to set the correct packing pressure and trip pressure relevant your field conditions. This is the wing down pressure gauge.
4.5 PRE-OPERATION CHECKLIST Inspect tires. Check tire inflation pressure and adjust, if necessary. Inspect wheel hub fasteners. Adjust torque to proper setting, if necessary. NOTE: Check wheel hub fasteners periodically to ensure proper tightness, especially prior to travel on public highways. Ensure flow valve (liquid fertilizer tank), if equipped, is closed. Check depth setting of packer wheel arms. Adjust, if necessary. Check depth setting of fertilizer knives. Adjust if necessary.
4.6 WINGING THE 7-PLEX MACHINE DOWN NOTE: Please ensure your dump line is coupled first. If your control box has a 7- plex wing down button please use the following 2 steps to lower your wings safely. 1. Engage the lever in the tractor cab that your green banded hoses are hooked to (which lowers your wings), press and hold the 7-plex wing down switch until all wings are on the ground. 2. Release switch and leave your lever (that your green banded hoses are hooked to) in working position (not float).
4.7 PRIMARY OPERATION Step 1 – Ensure that there is power going to your control box. Step 3 – Lock on your tractor lever that your green banded hoses are connected to. You will see full tractor pressure on the bottom middle gauge of your hydraulic manifold. Step 5 – Let the lever you last locked on come back into the neutral position. This lever is never left in the on position. It is only needed to raise and lower the shanks faster on headlands.
Every new Seed Hawk that is manufactured leaves with its shank pressure set at approximately 900 Psi. NOTE: The chain between the seed and fertilizer knife is tight. Step 7 – In order to get the proper packing and penetrating forces per field, we recommend that you lower your shank pressure from the cab at the beginning of each field. Step 8 – You now know that you need to increase your packing and penetration pressures. Hold the shank pressure button to change these pressures.
NOTE: The chain that is between the seed and fertilizer knife is tight. You now know that you are applying the proper amount of pressure for the current field. Step 9 – Once the knives get tight, notice the shank pressure gauge and its reading. In good seeding conditions, add an additional 200 Psi to the system. When seeding small seeds such as canola in wet conditions, adding the additional 200Psi is not recommended. You would tend to over pack.
4.8 PRIMARY OPERATION VARIABLES Packing Positive soil to seed contact is essential for optimum seed germination. Soil type, extent of tillage or disruption and moisture content all influence germination percentages. There are six primary variables that affect the quality of soil packing: • • • • • • Packer Tire Pressure Field Travel Speed Packing and Trip Pressure Cornering Furrow Depth and Width Knife Lateral Separation 4.8.
4.8.5 Cornering Ideally, the most effective seeding, fertilizer banding and soil packing occurs when the implement is pulled in a straight line. Some field conditions will not allow all of the seeding to occur in a straight line. It is important to remember that as the packer tire is following a curved path, it will tend to ride up on one side of the furrow. Seed and fertilizer placement, as well as, packing performance are all compromised. 1 4.8.
4.8.7 Knife Lateral Separation Confirm knife lateral separation, “Z” 1.5 in (38 mm), FIG. 15, especially after replacing knives, to avoid seed damage when applying high rates of fertilizer. NOTE: As with any field adjustment procedure, make only one change to a variable, operate the implement for a short distance and observe whether the change made any difference and whether the difference was positive or negative in outcome. z FIG. 15 4.9 SUPPLY AND DROP TUBES 4.9.
4.9.2 Range Of Knife Configurations 1 2 4 3 FIG. 17 The Seed Hawk fertilizer knife allows a variety of product delivery configurations: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Seed knife Liquid fertilizer Granular fertilizer Dry and Liquid or NH3 fertilizer Double Extrusion a. The Double Extrusion drop tube may be used for applying granular and Liquid Fertilizer or NH3 behind the granular product. Call your dealer for further information.
4.9.3 Twin Wing The Twin Wing Seed Opener Furrow Effect Picture as illustrated in Fig.31B Fig.31B Most Twin Wing openers are on 12” spacing. The customer would achieve 9” spacing due to the 3” seed separation ( Fig 31 B&C). With Single Side Band configuration,10” spacing is the narrowest spacing that Seed Hawk offers. What Twin Wing achieves is 2 rows of seed ¾” above and 11/2” to both sides of the fertilizer band. The 1.
4.10 CROP RESIDUE CONSIDERATIONS Fig 20 Seeding into fields with heavy residue is challenging, but residue cover is essential to the success of a zero-till cropping system. Ideally, the straw height from the previous year will be less than or equal to the width of the Seed Hawk Drill row spacing. For optimum results, the combine should chop the straw and spread the straw and chaff evenly across the entire swath width.
4.11 SEED HAWK PACKER TIRE 1 3 2 8 5 7 6 4 Y1 Y2 X FIG. 21 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Y1 Y2 X Packer tire Fertilizer knife Seed knife Fertilizer Seed Original ground level Final packed surface Loose soil and straw 0.75 in (19 mm) 0.75 in (19 mm) 1.50 in (38 mm) The packer tire bulges slightly to provide uniform packing over the seed and fertilizer furrows. This leaves the seed 0.75 in (19 mm) below the curved path left by the packer wheel.
4.11.1 Loose Soil Conditions If the soil is too loose before seeding, the final packed surface will be excessively below the loose soil that is thrown to the sides. This increases the likelihood of soil falling, blowing or washing back into the packer tire path. The result is an altered seed depth. The solution to this is to ensure that the soil is not too loose before seeding. It may be necessary to pack the soil before seeding.
4.12 SIDE BANDING WITH ANHYDROUS AMMONIA WHILE SEEDING WARNING! Use extreme caution when applying anhydrous ammonia fertilizer. Inhalation, skin and/or eye contact, or skin penetration can cause serious heath problems. Seek medical attention immediately if coming into contact with anhydrous ammonia. A bulging packer tire will cause the seed and fertilizer to be placed lower than the initial setting on the opener.
Extreme caution must be exercised when side banding with anhydrous ammonia (NH3). If the separation distance between the seed and the NH3 is not sufficient, the germinating seedling can be damaged. Several factors affect how far from the point of injection in the soil NH3 will move: • • • • • NH3 will move farther is dry soils than wet soils. Hilltops tend to have lower soil moisture content and are therefore more susceptible to NH3 travel. NH3 will move farther in light textured soils (e.g.
4.13 DROP TUBE EXTENSION with NH3 The delivery drop tube should extend 0.5 in (13 mm) past the stainless steel clips. This will prevent mud from freezing to the fertilizer knife. IMPORTANT: Seed Hawk assumes no responsibility if seedling damage is caused by anhydrous ammonia burn. The operator is responsible for checking and setting the seeder in all field conditions. 4.14 PLACING PHOSPHATE FERTILIZER WITH SEED IMPORTANT: Seed Hawk does not recommend placing phosphate fertilizer directly with the seed.
5.0 SBR HITCH 5.1 REQUIREMENTS: - must be seeded with G.P.S.
6.0 REAR WHEEL STEERING Rear wheel steering provides a number of functions which increase field seeding consistencies. Below it describes all the mechanical aspects of the steering components. Some benefits of rear wheel steering are: • Minimizing skewing on side hills. • Maintaining row spacing when cornering The Steering sensor arm is located on the second rank and is also pressured down to minimize skipping. The sensor arm triggers electrically left of right through either switch on the rear axle.
7.0 MAINTENANCE 7.1 HYDRAULIC CARTRIDGES Hydraulic cartridges, FIG. 22, should be removed, inspected and cleaned at the end of each seeding season. Some cartridges may be disassembled for additional access for cleaning. It is recommended that the disassembly and further cleaning of this type of cartridge be performed by a technician trained in hydraulic component servicing. FIG. 22 7.2 HYDRAULIC CYLINDERS Inspect hydraulic cylinder seals and hose connections at cylinder fittings every 10 hrs or daily.
7.3 CASTER WHEEL GREASE FITTINGS Lubricate two (2) fittings, #1 FIG. 23, every 50 hrs or weekly. NOTE: One fitting is on top and the other on the bottom of the caster wheel plate. 7.4 CASTER WHEEL PLATE GAP Measure gap between caster wheel plates every 100 hrs. The gap, “X”, should not exceed 1/8” (3 mm), FIG. 24. Adjust gap, if necessary, by tightening bolt on top of caster wheel plate assembly. 1 X FIG.23 7.
