Widescreen DVD video provides the most picture detail on a widescreen TV. It takes
advantage of as much of the picture height as possible in the DVD video format by
squeezing the picture horizontally. The HDTV monitor's widescreen setting expands
the picture to restore the intended movie aspect ratio. (When a widescreen DVD is
shown on an ordinary 1.33 (4:3) TV set, the DVD player must scale it to fit the TV
screen at a loss of some detail.)
Letterbox DVD video will contain the least detail. It is intended to show the entire width
of the movie, with the picture in its original filmed aspect ratio, on a 1.33 (4:3) TV. Let-
terbox formats lose a significant amount of detail to the black mattes at the top and bot-
tom of the screen.
